Have No Anxiety at All, but in Everything, by Prayer, Petition, with Thanksgiving, Make

October 2, 2011

27th Sunday in ordinary time

Is 5:1-7/Phil 4:6-9/Mt 21:33-43

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer, petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus… Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.”

As I look at my life, I discover countless people who have taught me. Parents, educators, friends we call role models, coaches, the list goes on and on. What one person in your life represents the ideal you wish to follow?

St. Paul was so convinced of his mission and ministry, that he was able to tell his disciples, ‘don’t fail to follow my example.’ He was sure that the road he had taken, then taught, was the key to salvation. He stressed his dependence on the Lord, turning to Him at every moment, moments of trial and despair, moments of joy and hope.

Paul included prayer and petition as the foundation, combined with gratitude, as the benchmark for his disciples. He offered words of encouragement and asked them to ‘think about those things’ and apply them to their daily lives. He wanted more from them than ‘just hanging in there’ but wanted them to grow and achieve, as he said two times, so that the peace if Christ would be in their lives. Let’s follow his words and example.

We Lift Up Our Hearts: The Roman Missal and its Chant

Fr. Gabriel O'Donnell, O.P. and Fr. Columba Kelly, O.S.B., will present a seminar, We Lift Up Our Hearts: The Roman Missal and Its Chant on 7 October, to be held at The Church of Saint Catherine of Siena, 411 E. 68th Street, New York, NY 10065. Father Gabriel O'Donnell is a spiritual master and a natural and enthusiastic teacher. Father O' Donnell will bring both of these gifts together as he demonstrates for us the real purpose of the Liturgy: praise of the Triune God and experiencing here on earth what we hope to enjoy forever in Heaven. In his talk, Heaven Wedded to Earth: The Importance of the Roman Missal and Its Implementation, Father O’Donnell will show his listeners what the Third Edition of the Roman Missal will accomplish and how very important it is for all of the faithful to embrace the new Missal with thought, prayer, understanding and without reservation. Fr. Columba Kelly, O.S.B. shares his expertise in his talk, Liturgical Chant As An Icon In Sound: God Speaks and We Respond. He will discuss how the Church has always been clear about the importance of Gregorian Chant. Both Musicam Sacram of the Second Vatican Council, and more recently Sing to the Lord (USCCB, 2007) speak of the pride of place which is to be given to Gregorian Chant and to its unique suitability for the Liturgy. The program is from 10-3 and admission is $30.
