COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a study of modern world history, including the inception of modern thought, exploration, enlightenment, political revolutions, the industrial revolution, nationalism, imperialism through the world wars, the cold war, the quest of countries seeking independence, and changes in current global patterns.
COURSE METHODS
1. Independent Reading at home with student created notes
2. Class discussions relating to assigned readings
3. Lectures and note taking
4. Films and slide shows
5. Homework including both assigned readings and written responses
6. Primary Source Analyzation in Small Groups
GRADING POLICY AND SCHOLARSHIP:
Grade will be updated via Aeries online upon 3-7 days of receiving assignment.
Grade Sheets: It is the responsibility of the student to look up his/her grade using the student portal to know the current grade in this class. No grade sheet will be printed and given to student(s). Missing/Late Assignments: NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED BEYOND THE DATE GIVEN FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. If a student is absent, it is expected that the student turns in the assignment(s) within two (2) days of return. If a student is absent for a long period of time (5 days or longer), arrangements will be made to have more time to complete assignments for full credit.
U.S. History Grade Breakdown
1. End of Chapter/Quarter/ Semester Finals 35% (No Retakes)
2. Quizzes will comprise 15%
3. Assigned Questions/Notes/ Assignments 25%
5. Primary Sources/ Analyzation 25%
CLASSROOM RULES AND POLICIES:
1. Listen and follow directions the first time given.
2. Be in the classroom preparing for the class before the tardy bell rings.
3. No electronic devices allowed in the classroom (unless given permission by teacher).
4. Respect others.
5. Follow the dress code at all times.
6. Follow all classroom procedures.
Consequences:
1. Warning
2. Teacher/Student conference
3. Parent contact, teacher/student conference
4. Buddy room, parent contact
5. Referral to administration
The teacher reserves the right to give a referral for severe disciplinary offenses which are listed on page 23 of the CHS agenda without prior parent contact
Rewards:
1. Individual student praise and/or a positive phone call home.
TARDIES AND TRUANCIES:
1. ONE (1) tardy results in a student/teacher talk.
2. TWO (2) tardies will result in a call to parent or guardian.
3. THREE (3) conference with parent/ student plus detention
4. FOUR (4) tardies will result extended detention.
5. FIFTH –Student Handbook pg.22 will be enforced. Referral plus Truancy action implemented.
Academic Honesty
You are expected to maintain the highest level of academic honesty while enrolled in U.S. History. Academic misconduct will only hurt you in the long run and is unfair to those who earn their grades.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students will learn how to avoid plagiarism at the beginning of the school year. It is the responsibility of each student to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is the stealing of another person’s ideas or words and not giving proper credit to that person. Look on page 27 of the student agenda for consequences of plagiarism. (Vellas, Syllabus 2106)
