All students taking this course must have passed BSC 2010C with a grade of ‘C’ or better prior to this semester. This course meets Area V requirements for the A.A./A.A.S./A.S. general education requirements. The course is the second portion of a comprehensive study of the fundamentals of biology including evolution, population genetics, phylogenetic taxonomic principles, form and function of plants and animals, and ecology. This course is intended for the science and science-related majors.

Course Performance Standards: The course performance standards may be accessed via the web at:

Text and Materials: Biology, 7th edition, Campbell, and Reece

Explorations in Basic Biology, 9th edition, Gunstream

Attendance Policy: It is expected that the students will attend all classes and laboratory sessions. If a class must be missed, the student is responsible for obtaining the information that was covered in a missed lecture. In the event that a quiz or exam must be missed, a written, valid excuse must be presented to verify the legitimate nature of the absence. The student also must notify the instructor or department secretary prior to the scheduled exam time. There will be no make-up quizzes offered. All make up exams will be essay or oral and only available by arrangement with the instructor.

Grading Policy: You will receive a single grade for this course, calculated from both lecture and laboratory evaluations. Lecture evaluations will consist of 70% of final grade; laboratory evaluations will consist of 30% of final grade.

The 70% for the lecture part of the grade will be broken-down as follows:

1.60% for lecture exams.

2.10% from quizzes/assignments.

Letter grades will be calculated on a straight percentage basis. The cut-off points for each grade are as follows: A- 90%, B- 80%, C- 70%, D- 60%.

Withdrawal Policy: In accordance with the Manatee Community College policy as stated in the college catalog, students may withdraw from any course or all courses without academic penalty of a WF by the withdrawal deadline as listed in the Manatee Community College academic calendar. This semester this date is March 15, 2006. The student must take responsibility for initiating the withdrawal procedure. Students are strongly encouraged to talk with their instructors first before taking any withdrawal action.

Statement of Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the use of ideas, facts, opinions, illustrative material, data, direct or indirect wording of another scholar and/or writer—professional or student—without giving proper credit. Expulsion, suspension, or any lesser penalty may be imposed for plagiarism or cheating in any manner.

Standards of Conduct: Students are expected to abide by all Lancer Student Handbook guidelines. Students may be withdrawn from the class by the instructor for any behavior that interferes with learning of others. Obtrusive late entries, early departures, cell phone calls, pager calls, conversations not related to class work, and general loudness fall under the category of interfering behaviors.

Course Assignments: It is recommended that the student read the chapter introduction and the chapter headings prior to class. The complete text should be read either before of after lecture depending on learning style preferences. Auditory learners frequently benefit from hearing the lecture prior to reading the bulk of the chapter. You may check your learning style preference by taking a short questionnaire that may be accessed at the following address:

Additional, detailed information concerning learning styles and study techniques may be obtained through the office of student affairs, testing center.

Students are encouraged to tape record the lectures if this mechanism for information storage is beneficial to their learning.
