The Theatre Royal equipment is also used on touring productions. Please check the availability before your arrival.

The Theatre is a 16amp venue therefore if you are hiring directly or providing your own LX equipment please ensure you order either 16amp connections or 16-15amp converters.

Get In

There is no long term parking at the Theatre Royal.

The Theatre Royal has limited parking on the buildings’ forecourt for the purposes of Get In/Out. All vehicles must be removed from the forecourt before the arrival of the public.

The get in route starts at the front of the building goes through the restaurant and into the loading bay at the rear of the stage. The ground slopes downward from the front door.

The Stage

The Theatre Royal is a proscenium arch Theatre with a removable forestage in two sections. Other configurations are possible in consultation with the Senior Technicians. Changes in configuration will have an impact on audience capacity and there may be labour costs to cover depending on contract. The stage floor is wooden planked covered with 6mm MDF painted black.

Traps

The Theatre is equipped with a counterweight trap which requires two persons to operate.

The resident team must be notified at least one month prior to the visiting company’s arrival if traps are required. The use of traps will incur material and labour costs.

Flying

There is NO fly tower.

A freestanding grid structure supports all over head bars. Wooden roof joists run through the grid at structural points. This limits the height of set the Theatre can accommodate.

There is NO IRON. The Theatre has a painted front cloth sited directly behind the proscenium arch. This is a smoke curtain which we have no legal requirement to show. The curtain is not mechanised and requires a member of the resident team to operate it.

The grid contains:

  • 11 x hemp rope sets
  • 10 x steel rope electric winches as marked (orange) on the stage plan.
  • 5 x internally wired bars for LX (12 Channels on each)

Hoist 1 (LX 1) will accept a 600 Kg SWL. All other hoists are limited to a 250 Kg SWL.

Pianos

If the visiting company requires a Piano, these can be hired from a local provider by the resident team. Please allow good time for this.

Backstage

Dressing Rooms

Access to the dressing rooms is through the stage door at the side of the theatre. A visiting company access code will be provided on arrival.

The theatre has seven dressing rooms: 2 large, 4 medium, 1 small.

All dressing rooms have mirror lights, costume rails and hot and cold water wash basins.

There are two toilets and one shower backstage for the use of the visiting company. Dressing room 2 is equipped for disabled access and has an en-suite toilet and shower.

Other Facilities

The Theatre has a laundry room equipped with two automatic washing machines and two tumble dryers. Iron and ironing board are available on request.

The Green Room has tea and coffee making facilities as well as a fridge, microwave and filtered water dispenser. House keeping is not provided, please ensure the green room is left clean and tidy after the get out.

The control room is located in the Gallery and is equipped with an ETC Congo Junior lighting board and all relevant accessories.

The Theatre audio mixing desk is positioned in the Gallery, auditorium right. Any alteration to this must be arranged before tickets go on sale.

Lighting and Sound are operated from separate positions. Alternative arrangements can be made for LX and sound to be operated by the same person in certain circumstances in liaison with the resident team.

Rules and Regulations

No Smoking Policy

The Theatre Royal is a National Trust building. This means there is no smoking policy across the entire site. Please dispose of cigarette ends in the bins provided.

Notification of Flame/Smoke/Pyrotechnic Effects

Visiting companies are asked to provide the theatre with one months notice if using they are using any of the above effects on stage. As the theatre is a National Trust building, permission will need to be obtained from the licensing authority by the resident team.

Flame proofing

It is a requirement of the Theatre Royal and the licensing authority that all set, properties, furniture and costumes meet with existing regulations regarding fire and flame proofing, and that all set, properties and costumes are maintained to meet these regulations.

Electrical Safety

It is a requirement of the Theatre Royal and the Licensing Authority that all electrical equipment brought into the building by a visiting company must have a current PAT safety test. Any equipment found to be untested will not be used. A charge of £7.00 per item will be made to the visiting company for any PAT testing of electrical equipment by the resident team.
