Duplicating a Line Segment

  1. Create a starter line. (Longer than the original line)
  2. Label Point C on the line.
  3. Put compass on Point A and measure the length of the original segment. (Do NOT change the compass!)
  4. Put compass on Point C and draw an arc of the same measure.
  5. Label intersection Point D.

Bisecting a Line Segment

  1. ON the line segment, open the compass OVER half-way.
  2. Put compass on Point A, and draw an arc. (Do NOT change the compass!)
  3. Put compass on Point B, and draw an arc. (You should have 2 intersections.)
  4. Label intersections Point C and Point D.
  5. Draw a line segment between Point C and Point D.
  6. Label the intersection of the line segment and the original line Point M.

Duplicating an Angle

  1. Create a starter line. (Longer than the original line.)
  2. Label Point D on the line.
  3. Put compass on Point A of the original angle and draw an arc that intersects BOTH rays. (Do NOT change the compass!)
  4. Label the intersections Point B and Point C.
  5. Put compass on Point D with the same distance from #3, and draw another arc of similar length.
  6. Label the intersection Point E.
  7. Put compass on Point C, and measure the distance from Point B and Point C. (Do Not change the compass from this NEW distance!)
  8. Put compass on Point E, and draw an arc. (The 2 arcs should intersect.)
  9. Label the intersection Point F.
  10. Draw a ray from Point D through Point F.

Bisecting an Angle

  1. ON the angle, place the compass on Point A and construct an arc that intersects BOTH rays.
  2. Label the intersections Point B and Point C.
  3. Put compass on Point B and construct an arc over half-way. (Do NOT change the compass!)
  4. Put compass on Point C and construct an arc of the same distance. (The 2 arcs should intersect at an x)
  5. Label the intersection Point D.
  6. Draw a ray from Point A through Point D.

Constructing Perpendicular Lines

  1. Put a Point A on the middle of the line.
  2. Put compass on Point A, and draw an arc. (semi-circle)
  3. Label the intersections Point B and Point C.
  4. Open the compass over half-way from Point B to Point C.
  5. Put compass on Point B, and construct 2 arcs.
  6. (One above the line and one below the line.)
  7. Repeat Step 5 on Point C.
  8. Label the intersections Point D and Point E.
  9. Draw a line through Point D and Point E.

Constructing Parallel Lines

  1. Put Point A on the middle of the line.
  2. Construct a PERPENDICULAR LINE to line m.
  3. You need to follow the steps to construct a perpendicular line.
  4. Label the new line, line n.
  5. Use Point D to construct a PERPENDICULAR LINE to line n.
  6. You need to follow the steps to construct a perpendicular line.
  7. Label the 3rd line, line p.
  8. Lines p and m are parallel.
