Duplicating a Line Segment
- Create a starter line. (Longer than the original line)
- Label Point C on the line.
- Put compass on Point A and measure the length of the original segment. (Do NOT change the compass!)
- Put compass on Point C and draw an arc of the same measure.
- Label intersection Point D.
Bisecting a Line Segment
- ON the line segment, open the compass OVER half-way.
- Put compass on Point A, and draw an arc. (Do NOT change the compass!)
- Put compass on Point B, and draw an arc. (You should have 2 intersections.)
- Label intersections Point C and Point D.
- Draw a line segment between Point C and Point D.
- Label the intersection of the line segment and the original line Point M.
Duplicating an Angle
- Create a starter line. (Longer than the original line.)
- Label Point D on the line.
- Put compass on Point A of the original angle and draw an arc that intersects BOTH rays. (Do NOT change the compass!)
- Label the intersections Point B and Point C.
- Put compass on Point D with the same distance from #3, and draw another arc of similar length.
- Label the intersection Point E.
- Put compass on Point C, and measure the distance from Point B and Point C. (Do Not change the compass from this NEW distance!)
- Put compass on Point E, and draw an arc. (The 2 arcs should intersect.)
- Label the intersection Point F.
- Draw a ray from Point D through Point F.
Bisecting an Angle
- ON the angle, place the compass on Point A and construct an arc that intersects BOTH rays.
- Label the intersections Point B and Point C.
- Put compass on Point B and construct an arc over half-way. (Do NOT change the compass!)
- Put compass on Point C and construct an arc of the same distance. (The 2 arcs should intersect at an x)
- Label the intersection Point D.
- Draw a ray from Point A through Point D.
Constructing Perpendicular Lines
- Put a Point A on the middle of the line.
- Put compass on Point A, and draw an arc. (semi-circle)
- Label the intersections Point B and Point C.
- Open the compass over half-way from Point B to Point C.
- Put compass on Point B, and construct 2 arcs.
- (One above the line and one below the line.)
- Repeat Step 5 on Point C.
- Label the intersections Point D and Point E.
- Draw a line through Point D and Point E.
Constructing Parallel Lines
- Put Point A on the middle of the line.
- Construct a PERPENDICULAR LINE to line m.
- You need to follow the steps to construct a perpendicular line.
- Label the new line, line n.
- Use Point D to construct a PERPENDICULAR LINE to line n.
- You need to follow the steps to construct a perpendicular line.
- Label the 3rd line, line p.
- Lines p and m are parallel.
