ROAD TRIP!

Name(s):______Period:______Date:______

The purpose of this project is to create budget and map out a 14 day road trip. You will present your road trip in a PowerPoint presentation.

You will travel at least 2000 miles, round trip, from your home and you must travel outside of California. The return trip must be a different route than the route taken to the destination.

You will record in your daily log the city you stayed, place you spent the night, the places where you ate, miles traveled that day, and costs for that day for the entire 14 day trip.

  1. Choose 1 personwho you would like to take with you. ______
  2. Choose2 major cities to visit: ______
  3. Choose 5 major attractions and 1 state capital that you would like to visit (Ex: historical sites, state and/or national parks, theme parks, museums, zoos, etc.) ______
  1. Rent a car

Company / Type of car / Gas Mileage / Cost

5. Gas money

Gas Mileage / Distance Traveling / Cost of gas/gallon
$4.00/ gal / Total cost of gas for trip (distance divided by the car’s mpg X cost of gas per gallon)

DIRECTIONS: Using your “Daily Log” and the attached “Grading Rubric” as a guide, you are to put together a PowerPoint presentation for your road trip.

Important Information…

  • Decide how you will make this trip (hotels, camping, staying with friends, etc…). You can only stay at a friend’s house a total of 3 nights and a minimum of 5 nights at a hotel.
  • Use a MapQuest or Google maps to chart your route of travel. Calculate how many miles you will travel each day and your total mileage (round trip must be greater than 2000).
  • Decide on which vehicle you will use. Use the information on the rental car website to determine how many miles per gallon the vehicle gets. Gas costs $3.78/gallon. Calculate how much gas you will use and how much gas will cost for the trip.
  • You must eat at 10 restaurants (at least 5 are “sit-down” restaurants). Decide on what you will order and estimate the price of your meal. Calculate how much it will cost for all of you to eat including the tips. Use information from the restaurant’s web site to determine this.
  • You must pay for hotels, campsites, or hosts gifts. Use the internet to decide which hotels or campgrounds you will stay in on your trip. Calculate how much your hotel costs will be, including tips. If you stay at friends’ houses along the way, decide on the host/hostess gift for the three nights.
  • Decide on how much extra cash you will each bring or what you will do in case of an emergency. No credit cards.
  • Calculate the total cost of your trip.
  • Be prepared to present your plan to your class.

Your final project must be complete, neat, and show the work you did to come up with your answers.
