SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET

  1. Open Netscape (in Research & Internet folder)
  2. Click on the Netscape SEARCH button (or go to BOOKMARKS, click SEARCH SERVERS)
  3. Click on a search engine (such as Snap, Lycos or Netscape)
  4. Type in a word or words to search (such as “national park service”)
  5. Click GO or SEARCH (or whatever is the search command for the search engine.)
  6. Read through the list and the description. Some of them may be worthless to you for your project. Don’t go them if they don’t sound promising.)

HOW TO SAVE A PICTURE TO USE IN ANOTHER PROGRAM

  1. Place your cursor on the picture.
  2. RIGHT click on the picture.
  3. Click on SAVE IMAGE AS.
  4. In SAVE IN make sure you have the correct drive (i.e. your name drive.) If not, click on the down arrow beside the LOOK IN box and find and click on the drive with your login name. This is your H drive. Or choose the Project drive and your folder within it.
  5. Change the name of the picture if you want (or not).
  6. Click SAVE
  7. Open the program you want to use the graphic in such as Word or PowerPoint and follow the instructions for that program to insert the picture.

HOW TO COPY AN URL FROM WORD AND PASTE INTO NETSCAPE LOCATION:

If you already have URLs in a Word document you can copy and paste them instead of typing the address into Netscape Location or Go.

1) Have both Word and Netscape open. (You can see them on the task bar at the bottom of the screen.)

2) Click on WORD on the task bar,

3) Open the Word document from the Template drive, the appropriate folder.

Go to File, Open

Click the down arrow beside the LOOK IN box.

Choose TEMPLATE

Double click on the appropriate folder

Double click on the appropriate Word document.

4) Highlight the first location URL

5) Go to EDIT, COPY or press CTRL+C to copy the url.

6) Click on NETSCAPE on the task bar.

7) Click in the LOCATION box where the url is found. Everything should turn blue in the box.

8) Go to EDIT, PASTE or press CTRL+V to paste the url.

9) Press ENTER on the keyboard.

10) When ready for the next location, click WORD on the taskbar and repeat the steps to copy and paste.

COPYING AN URL FROM THE INTERNET & PASTING INTO WORD FOR YOUR SOURCES:

3) Click on NEW on the task bar or if you already have a source or project document, open it.

4) Click on NETSCAPE on the task bar,

5) Click in the LOCATION box where the url is found. Everything should turn blue in the box.

6) Go to EDIT, COPY or press CTRL+C to copy the url.

7) Click on WORD on the task bar.

8) Place the cursor in the WORD document where you want the URL to go.

9) Go to EDIT, PASTE or press CTRL+V to paste the url.

10) Don’t forget to type in a NAME for the Internet page and a brief description of what you got from the site. You need this information for your SOURCES in your bibliography/works cited page.

HOW TO COPY INTERNET TEXT TO USE IN ANOTHER PROGRAM

This is like taking notes except you just copy the text from a site and paste in into your notes Word document. No more handwriting notes! What a time saver!

COPYING THE WHOLE PAGE AS A TXT FILE

1)You can save the whole web page as a text (TXT) file.

2)Go to FILE, SAVE AS.

3)Make sure you select SAVE IN for your H drive.

4)Click the down arrow to the right of the SAVE AS TYPE dialog box and choose PLAIN TEXT (*.txt).

5)In FILE NAME, type a name for the file. Make sure you give it a .TXT extension, such as mytext.TXT

6)Click SAVE.

7)Open Word. Go to FILE, OPEN.

8)Make sure you choose ALL FILES (*.*) where it says FILES OF TYPE near the bottom of the OPEN dialog box.

9)Choose your H:\ drive (or whatever drive you saved it in) where it says LOOK IN.

10)Select the TXT file.

11)It will often come into Word “funny” with odd margins or returns. Just edit the text as you usually would in the Word program.

COPYING ONLY PORTIONS OF THE TEXT

1)Sometimes you can select only certain parts of the text to copy and paste into another program such as Word or PowerPoint.

2)Place your cursor at the beginning of the text you want to copy.

3)Click, hold & drag your cursor to select (HIGHLIGHT) the text you want to copy.

4)Go to EDIT, COPY or press CTRL+C to copy the text.

5)Go to the software program where you want to paste the text, such as a Word document or PowerPoint slide.

6)Place your cursor on the page (or slide) where you want the text to be.

7)Go to EDIT, PASTE or press CTRL+V to paste the text.

8)It will often come into Word “funny” with odd margins or returns. Just edit the text as you usually would in that program.

DON’T FORGET TO SAVE YOUR DOCUMENT

  1. Go to FILE, SAVE
  2. Change the directory. Click the down arrow to the right of the SAVE IN dialog box.
  3. Select your H drive. It will have your login name. (Or the appropriate drive and folder.)
  4. Give the file a name.
  5. Click OK
