Applications are invited from highly motivated and suitably qualified candidates for a 0.5 time, fixed term contract as Programme Manager for H2020 funded projects, and in particular the ITN network “TRAIN-ERS” based in the Apoptosis Research Centre (ARC), National University of Ireland, Galway. The position is available from October 2015 to contract end date of December 2019, subject to an initial one year probationary period.This position is funded by the European Union.
Organisation: The programme manager will be involved in direct management and running of the H2020 projects, including TRAIN-ERS. The TRAIN-ERS project “Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Health and Disease” is an Innovative Training Network (ITN) funded under the EU-H2020 Marie Curie People Programme. TRAIN-ERS will educate and train fourteen early stage researchers in conventional and newly-emerging state-of-the-art disciplines such as systems biology, medicinal chemistry, computational and mathematical modelling, translational molecular and cellular biology, quantitative protein biochemistry, pharmacology and pathology/clinical diagnostics. TRAIN-ERS focuses on a comprehensive, multidisciplinary understanding of the ER stress response and application of this understanding to identify and validate the most suitable intervention points to develop targeted treatments for ER stress-associated diseases.
Job Description: NUI Galway wishes to recruit a highly motivated and talented ProgrammeManager for H2020 projects in ARC, including TRAIN-ERS network.This is a key position – the PM, working with the coordinator Professor Afshin Samali and other network partners will(1) implement and take responsibility for the operational management of the network (2)liaise with the EU project officer and (3) contribute significantly tothe TRAIN-ERS scientific program. The successful candidate will play a central role in monitoring and reporting activities and will also have proven capability in grant writing with a track record of successful applications.Working closely with the coordinator, the successful candidate will also provide scientific input;assist in the supervision and mentoring of early stage researchers as required and in the dissemination of project results and outcomes.
Duties:
- Monitor overall progress of the TRAIN-ERS research programme towards targeted milestones and deliverables.
- Ensure research programme requirements in terms of documentation of the project activities, milestones, etc. are implemented and adhered to in accordance with funding agency deadlines.
- Provide input into the scientific strategies and the interpretation of experimental data for the TRAIN-ERS project at NUI Galway.
- Assist in the supervision and mentoring of ESR’s associated with the TRAIN-ERS project at NUI Galway.
- Provide scientific input intoresearch programmes on-going in the overall Network.
- Assist in the dissemination of research outputs/activities, including identification of the appropriate pathways for dissemination and provide support for preparation of manuscripts and presentations.
- Lead on the preparation and delivery of periodic scientific reports for the Scientific Advisory Board and funding agency, as required.
- Support and develop new applications for academic/industrial/entrepreneurial funding which will enhance and develop the Network’s research.
- Perform financial management of the TRAIN-ERS network.
- Liaise with the EU to ensure that guidelines/recommendations are put into effect.
- Manage relationships with academic and industry partners.
- Liaise with administrative representatives of partner institutions.
- Participate in meetings and committees as deemed necessary
- Liaise with the NUI Galway TTO representative for the identification and protection of intellectual property generated.
- Represent the research activities of the TRAIN-ERS project and its NUI Galway-based team as required at local, national and international events (including talks, panel discussions, meetings with funding agencies, industry representatives etc.).
Qualifications:Essential
- A PhD in biochemistry/molecular biology or a related subject.
- A minimum of 5 years relevant research experience in an academic and/or industry R&D environment.
- Track record of demonstrable accomplishments in biomedical research as exemplified by relevant international peer reviewed publications.
- Evidence of proficiency in grant-writing and research manuscript writing.
- Experience of coordinating research funding submissions through national and international agencies is essential.
- Evidence of successful funding achievements.
- Excellent presentation skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Accurate attention to detail with ability to working within tight deadlines.
- Excellent organisational and analytical skills.
- Flexibility and ability to work in a team environment.
- Availability to travel nationally and internationally as required.
Qualifications: Desirable
- Knowledge of Endoplasmic Reticulum biology and cellular stress responses
- Experience working in the drug discovery industry
- Experience working internationally
- Experience of postgraduate research student (co-)supervision.
Salary:€44,871-58,991, pro-rata for this part-time post
