The Sociocultural Turn in Contemporary Psychoanalysis

Roger Frie, Ph.D. Psy.D. R. Psych.

In recent years, social and cultural perspectives have become increasingly visible and influential in contemporary psychoanalysis. Such perspectives see psychological processes such as the mind and self as socioculturally constituted – that is, actually made up within, as opposed to merely facilitated by, culture and society. Drawing on the interpersonal and intersubjective psychoanalytic traditions, Dr. Frie will discuss the evolution of sociocultural turn in psychoanalysis and illustrate changes in theory and practice using aclinical case example. Dr. Frie will examine the intertwining of culture, history, identity and language in a bilingual psychoanalysis between a German-speaking Jewish patient and a German-speaking analyst of German descent. He argues that we are fundamentally forged by culture and society and that our identities are revealed through our use of language. His paper illustrates the ways that we not only reside within culture, but that culture speaks through us, both consciously and unconsciously, in our responses to others.

Roger Frie, Ph.D. Psy.D. R.Psych. is Associate Professor of Education, Simon Fraser University, Affiliate Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, and Faculty Member and Supervisor, William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology, New York. He is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology and Editorial Board Member of Psychoanalytic Psychology. He has written and lectured widely on the interaction of psychoanalysis, social theory and philosophy and has published 6 books.
