Demographic profile

Barrow-in-Furness district is made up of fifty one wards. The total population of this district is 67,648. There are 41,763 residents of working age (16-64 years) accounting for 61.74% of the total population; 14,021 residents are aged 65+, accounting for 20.73% of the total population. (Table 1 below provides a breakdown of the Carlisle population).

Population projections

Population forecasts are available atdistrict level. Over the next 5 years (from 2014 to 2019) Barrow-in-Furness district’s overall population will decline, numbers of young people (0-15 years) and numbers of the working age population (16-64 years) are projected to decline, however numbers of older people (aged 65+) are projected to increase. By 2019, Barrow-in-Furness older population is projected to increase by 719 (+5%); over 25 years (by 2039) they are projected to increase by 3,791 (+27%). (Further details can be found in Table 2).

Life Expectancy

The average life expectancy of a male resident in the district of Barrow-in-Furness is 77.1 years, below the England average of 79.1 years. The average life expectancy of a female resident in Barrow-in-Furness is 81.5 years, below the England average of 83.0 years (Source: Office for National Statistics, 2009 – 2013).

Dementia

At a district level, numbers of the population predicted to have dementia in Barrow-in-Furness are projected to increase, reflecting the national picture. By 2030, the number of those living with dementia in Barrow-in-Furness is projected to increase by 53.7%, from 952 in 2014 to 1,464 in 2030. (Further details can be found in Tables 3 & 4 below).

Occupancy

The level of occupancy in bothcare homes was at a very similar level at the end of July with 25 and 24 beds occupied.

Where people are coming from

Between April 2013 and December 2015 (where data is available) people’s previous home address when admitted to Bevan House were located in the ward areas of Barrow Island, Belah (Carlisle), Hawcoat, Hindpool, Roosecote and Walney North.

Those admitted to Combe House in the same time period had previous home addresses in the wards of Barrow Island, Hindpool, Newbarns, Parkside, Ulverston South (South Lakeland), Walney North and Walney South.

Staff information

In Combe House out of a staff team of 49, currently 24 staff live on Walney and 25 live elsewhere.
