The Artist Mark Rothko Brought to Life

in New Stage Theatre’s Production of RED

JACKSON—New Stage Theatre presents John Logan’s REDApril 12-24, 2016. Curtain times and dates for performances are Tuesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. Ticket prices are $28.00 with discounts available for students, senior citizens and groups. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, located inside the Jane Reid Petty Theatre Center, charged by phone by calling the theatre at (601) 948-3531 or ordered online at This show contains strong language.

The production is being produced in partnership with the Mississippi Museum of Art and will complement the Museum’s presentation of When Modern was Contemporary: Selections from the Roy R. Neuberger Collection, the 15th featured exhibition in The Annie Laurie Swaim Hearin Memorial Exhibition Series, on view from April 9 through October 30, 2016.

Mark Rothko set himself apart as an artist. His abstract expressionist paintings are already world-famous, when he lands a commission of a lifetime. He works feverishly for two years only to be challenged dramatically by his assistant. The world of Mark Rothko comes alive in RED as we watch him create, contemplate, and confront his own demons and the changing world around him in this complex, mutli-layered play.

New Stage Theatre’s Artistic Director Francine Thomas Reynolds said: “I have been waiting for the opportunity to present the Tony Best Play award winner RED at New Stage Theatre since I first read it in 2011. “It is hard to resist a play that begins with the question, “What do you see?”, so when Betsy Bradley, Director of the Mississippi Museum of Art, approached me with the news that there was going to be a Rothko in the upcoming When Modern was Contemporary exhibit, I knew we had to make it happen. It is such a wonderful opportunity to be able to partner with the prestigious Mississippi Museum of Art, and I look forward to the many ancillary activities planned around the production of RED.”

New Stage is excited that the theatre’s own John Maxwell is on board to play this thrilling portrait of Mark Rothko and can’t wait for our audiences to be introduced to New York actor Cliff Miller, who has been cast as Rothko’s assistant, Ken. The play offers the opportunity for both actors to present “tour de force” performances.

The Museum’s Party of the (Mid) Century brings this legendary revelry into the contemporary space with a curated dinner, actors from New Stage Theatre’s production of RED, which brings to life the world of Mark Rothko, will present a scene from the production, music, signature cocktails from the state’s finest mixologists, and all the mystery of a first-class masquerade. Proceeds benefit the Museum’s exhibitions, programs, and community outreach. Cost: $150 per person (patron and sponsor commitments also available).
