Linglestown Middle School Physical Education
Regulations and Grading Policy
The main purpose of physical education is to teach students how to be physically fit for the rest of their lives. Through our rigorous program, students will gain knowledge and experience that will enable them to apply these learned skills to their everyday lives. Our goal is to have them experience exercise in many different forms and to ultimately show them how to create an effective personalized exercise program, which will serve to improve their own fitness level.
Society is changing and so must the face of physical education. We need to show our kids how to be physically fit. Just because a person is athletic does not mean that they are physically fit. Sports are still a part of the curriculum; however, the main focus of our class is fitness.
The Physical Activities Guidelines for Americans states that children and adolescence should be getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. This class will be an excellent start to reaching daily that number.
8th Grade PE Students will be tested using the Fitnessgram (Presidential Physical Fitness) program. Students will be tested in the mile run, PACER test, sit and reach, sit-ups as well as a push-up test. Students will work to improve on their scores routinely throughout the year. We will also measure height and weight to monitor BMI scores. Every day 5/6 of the school cycle we will test in one of the fitness gram tests.
Class will be divided into two parts:
- First Half: Warm-up/Workout: Students will complete exercises geared towards physical fitness. Students should work as hard as they can during this part of class. Teachers will be assessing your effort heavily during this part of class.
- Second Half: Sport Activity: The second half of class we will be playing a sport or activity that involves cardiovascular work as well as skills (ie, throwing/catching/kicking) and game strategies. These exercises will mostly be short sided 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 games.
