Hands On Gulf Coast (HOGC) began as Hands On Network’s response to the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Based in Biloxi, Mississippi, HOGC has been in operation since February 2006, continuing a partner’s operation opened in September 2005. Every week, volunteers from across the country come to Biloxi to work with HOGC in cleaning and rebuilding damaged homes, revitalizing public spaces, and supporting local community organizations. Some deployed volunteers are housed at the HOGC Civic Action Center, a unique and welcoming volunteer community. As recovery from Hurricane Katrina progresses, HOGC is working towards becoming a locally run organization that engages local volunteers in improving their own community through service. HOGC is committed to giving both deployed and local volunteers the chance to participate meaningfully in the recovery of the Gulf Coast; we are also committed to aiding the recovery process in a way that supports the visions, traditions, and efforts of local residents

Description: Hands On Gulf Coast is currently seeking an AmeriCorps member to help plan and organize the 2008 Alternative Spring Break (ASB) experience for the colleges and universities that plan to come to Hands On Gulf Coast during March 2008.

Positions Available: 2 Minimum Time (300 hr, approximately 2 months) AmeriCorps member positions to serve in Biloxi Mississippi from approximately January to March 2009.

Responsibilities:

· Communicate with Spring Break groups prior to their arrival to HOGC, ensuring they have all their final questions answered and details arranged.

· Coordinate the experience of Alternative Spring Break groups while they are at HOGC.

· Help orient the ASB groups as they arrive and assist in debriefing them upon departure.

· Assist in the evaluation process of ASB groups experience.

· Lead volunteers on projects, when needed.

Applicants acknowledge that they are responsible for conducting themselves in accordance with acceptable standards of behavior in the jurisdiction in which the proposed activities are conducted and, if required, for securing governmental or other approvals needed to conduct the proposed project.

Health Issues

It is the responsibility of the applicant and his/her parents/guardians to maintain adequate health insurance coverage, including (if desired) insurance for emergency medical evacuation. In the case of preexisting or chronic medical or psychological problems, applicants are advised to consult their health-care provider as to the feasibility of the project. In the case of an internship working in hospitals, schools or transitional shelters, applicants are advised to consult their internship supervisor and the Travel Clinic at Dick’s House to inquire if immunizations are required.

Security Issues

Applicants are responsible for adherence to the laws of the jurisdiction in which the internship activities are conducted, and for ascertaining in advance the appropriate standards of personal comportment. Should the applicant become involved in a legal difficulty (such as arrest or a civil complaint), it is the applicant’s responsibility to handle the situation. In addition, applicants should keep the Tucker Foundation and their parents/guardians informed of their address at all times.
