SUBJECT:Revised Summary of Requirements for Industry Review of equipment evaluated to the Standard for Switchboards, UL 891

This bulletin announces a revision to the Summary of Requirements for the ongoing file review for the eleventh edition of the UL Standard for Switchboards, UL 891. The date of the revision was July 26, 2005, and the effective date for these requirements is July 26, 2007.

The change to the Standard that is the focus of this revision was originally identified as a correction to a typographical error, and for that reason was not acknowledged in the Summary of Requirements. It has been determined that this change may represent a substantive change to some manufacturers, especially with the consideration that the Standard itself serves as part of the Follow-Up Service Inspection Procedure.

The Summary of Requirements are provided on the UL website in their entirety. Attached, as Appendix A, is an errata for the Summary of Requirements that details the revision that is the subject of this bulletin.

Questions regarding the requirements identified in the Summary of Requirements or the status of the file review process should be directed to the responsible UL Staff. Please see Appendix B of this bulletin regarding designated responsibility for the subject product category.

APPENDIX A

Summary of Requirements – ERRATA

UL 891 – 11th Edition

Effective Date – July 26, 2007

Table 16, Item 8 /

Assumed Maximum Short-Circuit Current Rating for GFCI Type ReceptacleThe assumed short-circuit current rating for GFCI type receptacles was incorrectly identified as 10 kA in the tenth edition of UL 891. This value has been corrected in the eleventh edition of the Standard to reflect the appropriate value of 2 kA for GFCI type receptacles. Components rated 2 kA must be adequately protected by impedance offered by a transformer (reference Table 16, footnote “a”), or tested to demonstrate suitability for connection to sources with higher available short-circuit currents.

Note: The manufacturer of the receptacle may have previously performed testing to applicable requirements in the Standard for Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters, UL 943.
