Rationale (Instructor’s statement relating course content to student’s personal and academic growth)
Trigonometry is a 1-credit trigonometry course designed to supplement the 3-credit Math 161—College Algebra course. Students who have taken or are taking Math 161 but subsequently desire to continue on into Math 165—Precalculus need to take this supplementary trigonometry course. Math 103 combined with Math 161 can be used in place of Math 163—College Algebra for Calculus to fulfill the prerequisite requirement for Precalculus.
Course Pre-requisites: MATH 083 or MATH 101 or LVM3, and RDNG 051 or LVR1; or, consent of the instructor.
Texts and Supporting Materials:
- Precalculus Through Modeling and Visualization by Rockswold Edition 2. Addison Wesley publisher.
- Scientific Calculator is required. I strongly recommend the TI-30X II or other scientific/statistics calculator by Texas Instruments.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
MATH 103 includes right triangle trigonometry with applications, an introduction to the unit-circle definition of the trig functions, and functions of special angles.
The course is split into the following two (2) units:
- Unit 1—Right Triangle Trigonometry (Sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 2.1, 2.3, 2.4)
- Unit 2—Circle Trigonometry (Sections 1.4, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2)
COURSE REPEAT POLICY
Policy on Repeated Courses, page 194 of the 2004-2006 CCBC catalog states, “Students may repeat a course only once without permission. When a student repeats a course, only the higher grade is computed into the Quality Point Average (QPA). All grades will remain on the student’s transcript. Before a student is permitted to register for the course for a third time, the student must have the permission of the academic dean responsible for the course. Before a student may repeat a developmental course that he or she has failed twice, the student’s record must be reviewed by a support team which will make recommendations regarding enrollment.”

Online Quizzes—For most sections there will be a short online quiz over basic skills. Individual scores on these quizzes will not be recorded; I will only record pass/fail results. These quizzes must be passed with a score of 80% or higher; however, you will have unlimited attempts to pass each quiz. Your grade for the quizzes will simply be the percentage of quizzes you have passed. It will NOT be your average score on the quizzes!
Unit Tests—There will be a test on each of the units. These tests must be taken in a testing center, either at one of the CCBC campuses or at another college or university near you. (Other institutions may charge you a small fee for taking exams at their testing centers.) These tests will be online, so you must be sure to make arrangements at a testing center that provides computers and Internet access for testing.
Final Exam—There will also be a comprehensive final given.

Attendance policy FOR THIS COURSE:
There are NO regularly scheduled chat sessions required for this online class. Instead, students are read through assigned materials and lecture notes, complete quizzes, and take unit exams according to the posted deadlines. If you have questions, you can post them to the course bulletin board, email the instructor or attend one of the regularly scheduled office hours in the chat room.
All students ARE required to read all bulletin board messages in a timely fashion. Failure to do so will result in 5% being subtracted from your semester grade.
Accessing Course WebCT Site:
All homework assignments and due date schedules are posted on this web site. It is your responsibility to check the schedules and assignments. You should print out copies of the homework schedules and assignment pages, as well as any other pages you deem necessary.
To access the WebCT site with the online quizzes, homework schedules and other course information,
- Go to
- Click on the words “Log on to”.
- Enter the User Name you received either in class or in your letter to online students.
- Enter your password, which should originally be the last 6 digits of your Social Security Number.

COLLEGE POLICIES FOR COURSE SYLLABI
Code of Academic Integrity
For the College to make its maximum contribution as an institution of high learning, the entire college community must uphold high standards of integrity, honesty, and ethical behavior. In seeking the truth, in learning to think critically, and in preparing for a life of constructive service, honesty is imperative. Each student has a responsibility to submit work that is uniquely his or her own, or to provide clear and complete acknowledgement of the use of work attributable to others. To these ends, the following actions are expected of students:
- Complete all work on exams without assistance.
- Follow the professor’s instructions when completing all class assignments.
- Ask for clarification when instructions are not clear.
- Report to the instructor any unauthorized information related to an exam.
- Provide proper credit when quoting or paraphrasing.
- Submit only one’s own work.
Students who do not accept responsibility for the integrity of their own work will experience sanctions, including a written reprimand, failure of the assignment, failure of the course, and/or dismissal from the program. For repeat and extreme offenses, the College reserves the right to suspend or expel students.
Writing Policy
The College recognizes that clear, correct, and concise use of language is characteristic of an educated person. Therefore, whenever possible, faculty members in all disciplines should require written assignments in their courses in order to encourage effective writing by their students. Also, instructors should consider the quality of writing in determining a grade for a written assignment. Poor writing can be a sufficient cause for a failing grade on a paper and, in extreme cases, a failing grade in a course.
Snow and Emergency Closing Policy
For late openings or closings at CCBC call the campus weather line 410-682-6000, check out the Web site at or tune into local radio and television stations.
Students are encouraged to seek help from their instructors whenever they encounter academic difficulty (either during scheduled office hours or by appointment). In addition, the Student Success Center in E312 has information about free tutoring provided. Stop by or call for more information (410-780-6820)
