OUTPOST is pleased to present this year’s Members Show selected by critic and curator, Andrew Hunt.
Kunstwerk Bazaar presents a dynamic selection of art practice in a variety of styles and media including painting, photography, sculpture, film, sound and performance, incorporating the work of over 60 artists selected through an open call to OUTPOST’s artists membership.
Hunt’s approach to the group show focuses on the aesthetic qualities of works, resulting in a playful selection and installation that investigates and challenges notions of style, taste and imagery. Through the careful placement of works, the selector draws attention to their formal values, offering unexpected relationships and new readings.
Individual pieces are positioned in close proximity to similarly mannered works with Kate Parrot’s Home Made Walking Stick has been paralleled alongside the work of Joseph Murray and Bess Shipside. Series such as Helen Sykes Creatures and Monsters collages and Matthew Thompson’s Stolen Label's are located throughout the gallery space amongst a visual assemblage encompassing all surfaces. The presentation of work extends to the more unusual spaces such as the gallery’s functioning office and kitchen with installation and film pieces such as R.J. Hinrichsen’s Untitled (Singing) and Thorsten Knaub’s The Doors !!!. The exhibition also features new works including site-specific work by Lucy Conochie and Phil Cooper, a floor-based piece by Simon Newby and a light installation by Tom Cox-Bisham.
Punctuating the show throughout its duration will be a series of performances and events, which produce another dimension to the accustomed presence of the show. On the opening night Jennifer Campbell will be carrying out a performance between the gallery office and kitchen, whilst at various intervals during the exhibition Simon Davenport, Caroline Wright, Julia Devonshire, Siam Demircan and Nux Vomicas will produce performances and interactions in and around the space.
