November 2015 TSLWorkshops in diagnostic histopathology (national diagnostic histopathology EQA circulation 009): Report and attendance list.

This workshop series was based on the Nigerian National Diagnostic Histopathology EQA circulation 009 with a theme of Urologic pathology and a sub-theme of gynae pathology (with emphasis on cases requiring the use of immunohistochemistry and focusing on the new approach/classification of ovarian epithelial carcinomas). The resource persons were:

1.  Dr. Olubunmi Ipadeola, consultant histopathologist at University Hospitals Limerick Republic of Ireland.

2.  Dr. Uche Igbokwe, consultant histopathologist, Queen’s Hospital (BHR Universtiy Hospitals NHS Trust) Romford England.

The first workshop held in ABUTH, Zaria on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th November. Due to an unfortunate personal tragedy affecting a member of the department, a contingent from AKTH Kano cancelled their plans to attend the workshop at the last minute. In spite of this, we recorded the highest attendance so far in any TSL workshop held in the North with a total of 25 persons. Attendants came from Sokoto, Plateau and Kaduna states. The highlight of the program was a presentation of a research proposal/pilot by Dr. Umar Sambasa (Sokoto) about evaluating the prospect of replacing OCT with office glue in tissue processing for intra-operative frozen section consultation.

The second workshop held in Benin on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th November. As usual there was a well attended grand opening ceremony with a representative of the chief medical director declaring the event open. A total of 24 pathologists were registered for the event with a good spread of attendants from Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers and the host Edo states.

The last workshop held in LUTH Lagos on Monday 30th November and Tuesday 1st December. Sadly a contingent from UCH Ibadan was prevented from attending by some unavoidable circumstances. However there was a good attendance of 30 pathologists from Lagos (including the general hospitals, FMC and a private pathology laboratory), Oyo (Ibadan and Ogbomoso), Osun and Kwara states.

The keys things to note in this workshop series include:

1.  A small improvement compared to the last time, in the number of EQA responses received prior to the closing date (24 including 6 consultants).

2.  It has become apparent that there is only a minority of participants who attend two workshops in a given year. That is the majority seem to attend only at a given centre in their region e.g. Lagos but not Ibadan or Kano but not Zaria. So there is a difficulty with the planned continuity between workshop series. This is important in the light of the fact that we are now settling into a rhythm to cover the major sub-specialties as main themes (and the minor ones as sub-themes); having done gynae pathology and uropathology as the main themes this year, we are set to return to breast pathology and GI pathology as the main themes in 2016.

3.  The presence of Dr. Olubunmi Ipadeola as a resource person was quite a significant event as he is the first that was not previously known to or invited by the facilitator. He was invited by the National coordinator Dr. Odubanjo.
