They will be performing in Madison for the state WSMA convention on October 27.
College auditions
Students interested in pursuing music in college should check out auditions for their selected schools. Some collegiate music departments are holding auditions as early as November, and many have specific requirements for the audition process. These entrance auditions often double as scholarship auditions as well. Please let Mrs. Hanson if you need help with your college music audition.

Sparta Area Schools Music Department Mission
The mission of the Sparta School music program is to provide students with meaningful music experiences in order that they may establish a solid and permanent relationship with music. The basic elements- melody, rhythm, form, tone color, harmony, and interpretation- provide a process for the students to acquire music literacy.
Expression of emotions and feelings is communicated through music. Through the musical experiences of creating, performing, reading, writing, singing, playing, and listening, students will develop an appreciation for music.
The music experience will also provide students with a sense of their own heritage (history and culture) and enable them to develop an awareness and acceptance of other cultures.
The music experience fosters success. In addition to developing leisure time pursuits, the music experience facilitates and enriches the teaching of other curricular subjects, and encourages exploration of vocational opportunities.
ABOUT THIS CONCERT…
This is the 18th annual Fall Folk Fest at Sparta High School. The annual concert split into two dates beginning in 2010. When FFF began, there were three choirs. Now we have six. FFF Part 1 on October 15 featured Show Choir, Vocal Jazz, and SHE4. Tonight’s concert focuses on folk music from various countries and cultures.
Three Hungarian Folk Songs contains stories from simple community life of days gone by. The first is about a handsome butcher named John Brown. The second tells a story of love’s first kiss. The third is a silly children’s song, slightly irreverent, but fun to sing. Siyahamba is a South African freedom song, giving a message of freedom achieved through salvation. Doraji is a beautiful white wildflower that grows on the shady slopes of Korean mountains. The translation:
Doraji, white doraji by the mountain stream,
Dig up one or two roots to fill the bamboo basket
To overflowing.
Even though the Morning Song seems like a simple melody, it actually has quite a history. The song ‘Amazing Grace’ holds great meaning to the Cherokee people. The beginning melody, however, is by the Teehahnahmah Indian Nation, and is sung in their ancient language, which is sadly becoming lost as fewer children learn about it. The composer has cleverly combined these two melodies:
I am of the Great Spirit; it is so.
He paid for us, then went up high.
But he said he would return.
All the earth as we know it will end;
All will be glad to see him return.
All will live in peace; it is so.
Vois sur ton Chemin is from the French movie “Les Choristes”. The film takes place in 1949 postwar France at a dark, doom-filled school for troubled boys. Their new teacher manages to reach the boys through singing. Several of the film’s songs became a surprise hit in France, and were published worldwide.
See upon your path, kids lost and forgotten.
Take their hands to lead them
Toward other tomorrows.
Feel in the heart of the night the wave of hope,
Ardor of life, pathway of glory.
Joys of childhood too quickly forgotten, erased.
A golden light shines steadily
At the very end of the path.
Camino, Caminante draws on several Afro-Cuban and Latino influences. Many rhythmic patterns are demonstrated during the piece, as a nod to these cultures that teach these complex rhythms through a mostly oral/aural culture. Many Americans are taught music “from the neck up”, and find it difficult to categorize these rhythms that are ‘natural’ to many other cultures.
Traveler, there is no path.
Paths are made by walking.
Sometimes we travel together.
Sometimes when we travel, we travel alone.
The Blessing was recorded by the world-renowned women’s singing group “Celtic Woman”, which makes for a beautiful closer for our Treble Choir.
After the Gold Rush was written and recorded by the iconic American folk artist Neil Young. He often performed it solo, accompanying himself on pump organ. Double Shot contains Biblical text that can refer to both Old Testament and New Testament verses. The soloists represent the storyteller. Down to the River to Pray is an old revival song that was made recently famous in the movie “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou”. He’ll Make a Way was written by the current composer and conductor of the Spirit Chorale of Los Angeles. His mission is to provide educational and historically accurate musical examples of gospel, spiritual, and African-American music.
