SOCIAL MEDIA INTERNSHIP
A proposal for undergraduate internship with Candlelight Concert Society during 2017-2018 season.
Candlelight Concert Society (CCS) presents a nationally recognized, world-class Chamber Music Series; a CandleKids series to spark children’s interest in the performing arts; Educational Outreach programs to build an audience for the future through performances, lectures, workshops, and master classes; and Community Outreach performances for Howard County residents unable to attend a formal concert setting.
Based in Columbia, MD since 1972, CCS has presented the finest in Chamber Music concerts and is ranked among the best professional series in the United States. CCS is a not-for-profit organization. CCS has an Executive Director, Artistic Director, Office Manager, a 14-person Board of Directors and many volunteers. Information is available at
Each season features 8 Chamber Music concerts, 2 CandleKids performances for primary grade children, and over 20 Educational & Community Outreach activities. In addition, there are several concert fundraising events.
The Appeal:
This internship is designed for those interested in website design, blog set-up, podcasts and social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The Experience: The intern will work with:
- Executive Director and staff to gain understanding of CCS from planning to implementation
- Artistic Director who develops annual programs and selects musicians
- Social Media consultantwho is working on website redesign and increasing social media followers across all medias
The Assignments: The intern will work on the following
- Work to assist with the design optimization of the website to expand information on community service programs
- Assist with researching industry best practices, competitor methods, technology and trends
- Participate in on-site liaisons to capture live moments in rehearsals, interviews with the artists
- Strengthen the brand image for CCS and increase their presence during the off-season
The internship will appeal to the following skill set:
- Interest in classical music
- Skilled computer technology and interest in social media platforms
- Ability to compose and/or write summary of artist background and music style
- Good social and presentation skills
- Share learning experiences with the PR and Marketing Development groups
Additional opportunities include:
- Meet the artists
- Work at a performance including front-of-house, box office, usher, artist liaison, etc.
- Participate in an outreach program
- Coordinate volunteer activities
Time: 4-5 hours per week in the Columbia office, with remaining hours accomplished remotely.
A successful internship will be measured by:
- Identifying contributions to effective enhancement to CCS website
- Identifying increase in social media participation and resulting ticket sales
- Suggest 1-2 key enhancements to the current CCS methodology
- A 20 minute presentation to the Board of Directors at the conclusion of the internship on accomplishments and recommendations.
