Description: Tech I is designed to provide students with practical information about drafting, hand and power tools, project planning, wood and metal working. Students will learn basic drafting principles and how to apply them to develop small projects. Students will learn how to work safely and accurately with hand tools and a few power tools. Tech I is an introductory course designed to get students interested in the different fields of technology and allow them insight into the different courses we offer here at Ste. Genevieve. Students design and build small wood projects and develop a pattern and cut out and shape a project out of sheet metal.
Weeks 1-5(approx.): Students will be working in the drafting field. We will start with learning how to read a ruler and proceed to making working drawings, complete with dimensions. Students will need to show an understanding of the principles and techniques used to make and read drawings in order to progress to the next section, which is developing a project from a set of plans.
Weeks 6-14(approx.): Students will take a set of working drawings they have created and come up with a plan of procedure to construct a CO2 car. We will begin with general shop safety and proceed to identify and use all of the wood working hand tools used in this class, as well as a few of the wood working power tools. Students are expected to demonstrate safe and proper operating procedures and students must also pass a safety test on each tool. Students are required to score an 80% or higher on all safety tests, or they must be taken over. Students will design and build their CO2 car to a set of specifications. They will then get to race each other to see who has designed and constructed the fastest car. After completing the car, each student will follow a set of plans to build a small wood project.
Weeks 15-19(approx.) Students will develop a pattern for a sheet metal project using the drafting skills they developed earlier in the semester. We will go over safety in the metal shop and identify and use various metal working hand tools. Students will cut, bend and shape sheet metal into a finished product that they can take home and use.
