Marine Litter Project Situation Analysis Checklist
This document sets out the issues you should consider in a project situation analysis. The purpose of this checklist is to help you to understand your local situation and to identify any key issues that may impact the planning or implementation of your project.
You can document your situation analysis in the table below or use it to complete the Project Situation and Need section of the MARELITT Project Plan Template. The length and detail of your situation analysis will vary according to the size and needs of your project. For small projects, the situation analysis may only be a few paragraphs long. In bigger projects involving a large number of vessels and/or multiple ports, it will need to be longer and more detailed.
Project intervention area / ü Briefly describe the area from which marine litter would be removed: Which marine activities can be found in the area? Tourism? Shipping? Fishery? Aquaculture?ü Are there sensitive habitats in the project area?
Marine litter in the area / ü How frequently do fishermen catch litter in their nets?
ü According to fishermen, are there concentrations of marine litter in certain areas?
Ports / ü How many ports are there in the project area?
ü What is the distance between the ports?
ü What are their existing waste management arrangements and facilities? Which waste management companies are contracted by port authorities? Are these companies private companies or public?
ü Are fishermen expected to pay a fee for landing ship-generated waste?
ü What are the contact details of the harbour masters?
Fishing sector / ü How many fishing vessels are registered in the fishing ports you wish to involve in the project?
ü Describe the type of fishing vessels operating in the area (type and size). What is the most common type of fishing vessel in the area?
ü What types of fishing practices are most common? What type of nets/gear do fishing vessels use? How many days on average do vessels spend at sea?
ü How many fishermen’s associations are there in the project area? How many fishermen per association?
ü What are the contact details for the fishermen’s associations?
Policy / ü Is marine litter a priority at the national, regional or local level? Have the national, regional or local authorities conducted initiatives on marine litter, waste reduction in general, or the marine environment?
ü Are there ongoing or future calls for proposals or funding opportunities at national, regional or local level for projects on waste reduction or the protection of the marine environment?

Existing Marine litter projects / ü Are there any similar projects that have already been undertaken in the area? These projects may include:
- Fishing for Litter projects
- Beach clean-ups
- Diving for litter campaign
- Removal of surface litter
- Removal of riverine litter
