Announcing an undergraduate research experience for
First and Second Year Students at SheltonStateCommunity College,
StillmanCollege, and The University of Alabama
This program is supported by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Program to The University and Alabama, and applicants should be first year or second year college students majoring in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or Chemical Biological Engineering.
The students who are accepted into this initiative will participate:
● in a spring 2014 seminar,
● a nine-week summer program of independent research under the guidance UA faculty mentors,
● a summer research symposium,and
● an academic year-visiting-scientist-speakers’ series.
During the summer research program:
● weekly group meetings allow students to discuss their research results and learn more about the process of research, and
● field trips will expose students to the application of scientific inquiry and discovery in the laboratory and in the field.
When students have research ready for presentation, they may:
● write-up their discoveries in the journal JOSHUA and other peer-reviewed journals and
● travel to present their research at professional meetings.
The program starts off with a 2014spring semester seminar, meeting on Mondays 4-4:50 PM to discuss the "Great Discoveries of Science." The seminar will meet on the campuses of Shelton State Community College, Stillman College, and The University of Alabama, alternating campuses each week and is required for all participating undergraduate researchers.(NOTE: You need to keep Monday 3-5PM clear in your spring semester schedule if you are selected to participate in this program).
Undergraduate researchers can earn up to $3,600 (working 40 hours per week for 9 weeks). To help defray cost-of-living expenses, $400 for living expenses will be added onto students’ ACT CardsOR on-campus housing will be provided.
