COURSE DESCRIPTION

Physics: This is a classical physics course. The course covers mechanics, waves, sound, light, optics, magnetism and electricity. A student must have a solid grounding in algebra, willingness to work and the desire to learn. The course uses math as a tool but emphasizes the ability to think, understand and apply concepts. Students should expect an average of 20-30 minutes a night of homework including practice problems, text readings, lab write-ups, prep for quizzes or tests.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

We will utilize a wide variety of learning strategies including but not limited to: lectures, hands-on lab/experiments, cooperative group learning/ discussion and projects. Active participation by every student is both expected and required.

MATERIALS

  • Textbook/Workbook
  • Spiral Notebook
  • Scientific Calculator (cell phones w/ calculator functions are prohibited)
  • Supplies: pencils, several colored pens and/or pencils, highlighters

CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT

Each class period will begin with the students quietly entering the classroom and IMMEDIATELY starting the warm-up activity. Journal topics (reflections, problems, brain teasers) will be placed on the board at the beginning of each class. If students wish to socialize prior to class, please do so in the hall. By entering the classroom you are expected to immediately take a seat and begin the warm-up exercise.

As per school policy IPODS and similar audio/video technologies are prohibited in the classroom as well as campus. They will be immediately confiscated and turned in to the appropriate Assistant Principal.

Cell phones are similarly prohibited in the classroom and will be confiscated and turned in to the appropriate Assistant Principal, as well.

NO HATS OR HOODS in the classroom.

NO FOOD OR DRINK in the classroom.

  1. Come to class prepared. This means every student should come to class with something to write on, something to write with, and a working calculator, every day. If you are absent, you are responsible for obtaining handouts, assignments, and notes, and then also checking with me to make arrangements for extra help or to make up work. Late assignments receive no credit.
  2. Give me your best every day. I realize that the amount of energy may vary from day to day. Everyone has good days and bad days. Each of my students expects me to give them everything I have every day — I expect the same in return.
  1. Be respectful. Have your materials and work hard from the bell until I dismiss the class. Handle lab equipment, books, and technology with care. Create a safe environment in which we all feel comfortable asking questions. Accept and respect each other’s talents and differences.

Conduct yourself in a professional manner.

  1. Copying data from another lab group without the instructor’s permission is plagiarism.
  1. Paraphrasing another student’s or an outside source’s work in the analysis, discussion, or conclusion section of a lab report is plagiarism. The purpose of these sections of the lab report is for you to demonstrate your understanding through original thought. Since making your analysis, discussion, or conclusion sections of a lab report available to others also violates the code, the instructor doesn’t have to determine whose lab is original and whose is paraphrased since both students have violated the code.

6.Removing any exam materials or copies of exam materials (questions, answer sheets, scratch paper) from the classroom, either intentionally or accidentally, is considered theft, regardless of whether any of these materials are shared with others.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework and projects are expected to be completed and turned in ON TIME!

NO NAME = NO CREDIT

TARDY/DISCIPLINE

School-wide discipline and tardy procedures will be followed.
