LEADERSHIP presented by Mr. Howard
-Club sports provide opportunities to engage beyond collegiate athletics and help administration expand involvement in student experience programming
-“Four corners of leadership”
- Communication
- Active listening, relay clear expectations (what and why), peer involvement in decision-making processes
- Trust
- Relationship building = necessary to success, members must *believe in your ability, in what you do and say, and in the actions of the organization
- Confidence
- In yourself and members, proper delegation (you can’t do it all alone)
- Dedication
- Time and effort are not optional
SETTING EXPECTATIONS
-Developing clear expectations requires knowledge of what, when, why and how you wish for members to complete tasks, all clearly communicated, and preferably in writing
- Provide proper placements, select the right person for the right job
- Leave little room for error by documenting everything (re: codified rules and regulations, meeting minutes, saved memos, emails, etc.)
- Develop training if necessary
- You cannot expect membership to perform a task they do not know how to do and do well
- Allow for participation in decisions
- Help members set achievable goals
- Provide a sense of unity
- You’re there to support them! “I noticed you were experiencing a bit of trouble with X, Y, Z, how can I help?”
- Give feedback
- Answer two simple questions for members: “What am I doing that I should keep doing?” and “What am I doing that I should change?”
- Recognize achievement and reward good work
- Use your resources and be proactive!
- Professional staff is available to help you
-All sport club bylaws and rules documents must be sent to Tessa by October 18th
