LEADERSHIP presented by Mr. Howard

-Club sports provide opportunities to engage beyond collegiate athletics and help administration expand involvement in student experience programming

-“Four corners of leadership”

  • Communication
  • Active listening, relay clear expectations (what and why), peer involvement in decision-making processes
  • Trust
  • Relationship building = necessary to success, members must *believe in your ability, in what you do and say, and in the actions of the organization
  • Confidence
  • In yourself and members, proper delegation (you can’t do it all alone)
  • Dedication
  • Time and effort are not optional

SETTING EXPECTATIONS

-Developing clear expectations requires knowledge of what, when, why and how you wish for members to complete tasks, all clearly communicated, and preferably in writing

  • Provide proper placements, select the right person for the right job
  • Leave little room for error by documenting everything (re: codified rules and regulations, meeting minutes, saved memos, emails, etc.)
  • Develop training if necessary
  • You cannot expect membership to perform a task they do not know how to do and do well
  • Allow for participation in decisions
  • Help members set achievable goals
  • Provide a sense of unity
  • You’re there to support them! “I noticed you were experiencing a bit of trouble with X, Y, Z, how can I help?”
  • Give feedback
  • Answer two simple questions for members: “What am I doing that I should keep doing?” and “What am I doing that I should change?”
  • Recognize achievement and reward good work
  • Use your resources and be proactive!
  • Professional staff is available to help you

-All sport club bylaws and rules documents must be sent to Tessa by October 18th

  • Make meeting(s) attendance a priority!!!
  • Be concise and have application handy

THE APPLICATION

  • If other appropriation types are submitted, Tessa will not have access to the document

-Read and understand SGA’s financial path document

  • Paragraph format
  • Pretend you’re applying to individuals who know nothing of your club, be explanatory
  • SGA considers amount of time and prep dedicated to application process when voting
