Activities for Hispanic Heritage Month 2014

Fourth and Fifth (4th & 5th)

These activities should be done ONE per day.
OBJECTIVES:
* Students will learn and demonstrate comprehension about Hispanic Heritage. (4th – 5th)
* Students will compare and contrast similarities and differences among a variety of cultures.
* Students will demonstrate abilities to use various sources to research information about the
Spanish speaking countries around the world. (5th )
* Students will demonstrate abilities to write short biographies about Hispanic-American
achievers/Role models. (4th)
* Students will make a booklet about “Hispanic Role Models”. (4th)
* Students will compare and contrast between the live of a Mexican student (living in
Mexico) and an American student (living in USA). (4th ) (watching a video is required)
* Students will make a Venn diagram, comparing and contrasting the lives of a Mexican and
American student. (4th)
* Students will learn about the different international flags from the Spanish speaking
countries. (4th -5th )
* Students will make a Spanish project about Spanish speaking countries around the world.
(5th)
* Students will visit sites to explore the history, geography, food, population, monetary unit,
among others. (5th)
* Students demonstrate abilities to draw flags of countries where Spanish is the official
language. (4th-5th)
* Students will color the “Hispanic” flag assigned following the guide provided. (4th)
* Students will watch a video about Hispanic Heritage in Central America, Argentina, Guatemala,
Mé xico and Puerto Rico. Then will answer questions about the video. (4th – 5th )
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
· Flags of Nations: Students illustrate flags of countries where Spanish is the official language.
· Students will watch a video about Families of Mexico. (29 mins. in length)
· Students will compare and contrast the lives of two students. (oral activity).
· Students will make a Venn diagram, comparing and contrasting the lives of a Mexican and American students.
· Students will watch a 30 minutes video about Families of México
· Students will watch a 30 minutes video about Families of Puerto Rico
· Students will search the internet for the facts required to complete their Spanish project. (5th )
· Student will have a brief discussion about the Spanish Culture and Customs.
Lesson Plan
· On the board, write the names of the following countries where Spanish is the official language: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, República Dominicana, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guinea Equatorial, Guatemala, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, Puerto Rico, España (Spain), Uruguay, Venezuela.
· Read the names of the countries to students. Show students pictures of the flags from these nations from library sources or one of the following Web resources:
i. The World Factbook: Flags of the World
ii. World Flag Database
iii. Geographic Index to Flags of the World (Alternate Source)
· Distribute the drawing materials. Assign each student one country. Have students illustrate that country's flag. Write the name of each country under each illustration.
· Display the completed flags on a classroom wall or hall wall, or hang them as mobiles.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
v TV/VCR (for video showing)
v Computers with Internet access or library sources
v Paper, pens, markers, crayons, glue and scissors
v Construction paper, colored Hispanic flags guides, flag worksheets, Hispanic achievers pictures.
v Magazines, videos
v Props and realia….
