Writing Measurable Objectives

How is a goal different from an objective?

A goal is:

· A statement that explains what the overall organization would like to accomplish

· Sets the fundamental, long-range direction

An objective is:

· A specific statement that explains what you will accomplish in order to fulfill the overall goal

· Measurable level of achievement

· Purpose

-Provides clear expectations

-Guides content

-Helps organize tasks

-Lets the administration know what’s going on

-Provides basis for evaluation

Writing SMART Objectives

S = specific

· Concrete

· Use action verbs

M= measurable

· Numeric or descriptive

· Quantity, quality, cost

A = attainable

· Feasible

· Appropriately limited in scope

R = results-focuses

· Measures outputs or results

· Includes products, accomplishments

T = timely

· Identifies target date


EXAMPLE:

Goal: In an effort to decrease the number of disciplinary incidents, the counseling department at VCU High School will provide group counseling services to students struggling with anger management.

SMART Objective for Anger Management Group:

Students participating in the Anger Management group will increase the use of anger management skills in the classroom by 20% at the conclusion of the group experience.

PRACTICE:

Goal: In an effort to increase test scores on the VA SOLs, the counseling department at VCU Middle School will provide classroom guidance lessons on test-taking skills.
