Level / 3Credits / 80
Purpose
This certificate is designed to recognise the skills and knowledge of an experienced practitioner in te ao tūroa. They could be in such roles as teachers involved in Education Outside the Classroom programmes, community or recreation programmes, youth leaders, assistant guides, assistant instructors or assistant leaders. It is intended that people who gain this qualification work under the guidance and supervision of a more highly qualified and/or experienced practitioner. The holder of this qualification will be able to demonstrate knowledge of tikanga, and apply or facilitate, where appropriate, tikanga-a-iwi and tikanga-a-hapū in the outdoors.
The credits from Elective 1 recognise the specific knowledge and skills of bush-craft based in Māori worldview. The requirements for Elective 2 recognise Tikanga, Te Reo Māori and Māori Tourism and underpin the more specific skills in Elective 1. The requirements for Elective 3 then provide a base for general outdoor recreation skills.
This qualification has been specifically designed to appeal to Māori with a view to increasing the representation of Māori in outdoor recreation and/or outdoor living. Those people who already possess the relevant skills and knowledge are encouraged to seek recognition through assessment of current competence.
While this qualification does not lead onto or from any other national certificate, candidates may also wish to complete the National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Group Leadership) (Level 3) [Ref: 0449].
