Statistical Information for Portsdown Archdeaconry,

(Anglican) Diocese of Portsmouth

The Portsdown Archdeaconry covers all of the areas of Portsmouth City Council (a unitary authority) and Havant Borough Council (lower, of two tier authority under Hampshire County Council). Small parts of East Hampshire District Council to North and Winchester District Council (both two tier authorities) also fall within it but data is not yet available for the smaller areas. 2011 detailed Census data is due for release at the end of 2012/beginning of 2013. Most recent (and reliable) data is therefore only available at the local authority level.

Deprivation

This shows that on the mainland, the most deprived areas (in the top 10% nationally) are Paulsgrove and Heart of Portsmouth (Portsmouth Deanery) and Leigh Park and Wecock Farm (Hartplain) in the Havant Deanery. Note that this indicator is a good discriminator of disadvantage but poor discriminator of wealth at the other end of the scale. (Red is more meaningful than blue.)

Health

The greatest inequalities tend to be felt in more urban settings. One of the most significant indicators is often life expectancy. In Portsmouth, the figures for women have improved to the national average, whereas for men it is still below, largely due to smoking and obesity. Within Portsmouth, however, the picture varies significantly. Male life expectancy at birth varies between wards that are within a few miles of each other by as much as 10.2 years which reflects the significant inequality between places like Charles Dickens ward and Drayton and Farlington.Havant beats the national averages.

Education

This shows the Children and Young People’s sub domain, of the Education domain of the 2010 Index of Multiple Deprivation by Super Output Area (similar basis to the IMD map earlier). Black lines are local authority areas. It is an aggregated measure of attainment at key stages 2, 3, and 4. This is the main deprivation issue for the area, showing that the previously smaller areas of general deprivation now light up red, mushroom (and in Portsmouth almost join up). This reveals a major challenge around educational attainment, which chimes with more anecdotal evidence of a culture of low aspiration.
