Application for Officer Position
Becoming an officer for the Student Society for Global Health (SSGH) at The University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) is a great opportunity to develop your leadership skills and contribute meaningfully in several ways to address the global health challenges of today! You will have the opportunity to use your knowledge and skills to promote global health effortsboth within UTSPH, across the Texas Medical Center and beyond!
Only duly registered and financially up-to-date full members of SSGH are eligible to apply!
Officer Cabinet:
1. The President shall be the leader and the voice of the Student Society for Global Health. S/he shall
- preside over all meetings (general and officer)
- represent the organization at official School of Public Health (UTSPH ) or UTHealth functions
- serve as an inter-institutional advocate for global health and for SSGH
- lead meetings and discussions with institutional leaders to promote SSGH activities moving forward
- will coordinate official correspondence from SSGH
- advocate for global health education, research, and service within and beyond UTHealth:
- building research opportunities
- building education opportunities (inward and outward)
- building community service opportunities

2. The Vice-Presidentshall
- assume the duties of the president in his/her absence or upon the request of the president
- assist in all the efforts of the president
- attend meetings; following through on action items; advocate wherever possible
- disseminate and delegate needed action to officers
- represent SSGH as liaison at various institutional forums/entities (Houston Global Health Collaborative (HGHC), BCM global health, Rice 360, Students Improving Global Health in Texas (SIGHT), SSGH Austin etc)

3. The Secretaryshall
- organize SSGH officers’ and general meetings
- take minutes at meetings
- maintain minutes and activities database (Google drive, SSGH shared drive on UTSPH server)
- take notes at events as needed
- be responsible for general records keeping and other administrative duties such as maintaining and harmonizing a calendar of the organization’s events

4. The CommunicationsDirector
The Communications Director shall be responsible for
- public relations, media efforts, and marketing, including the creation of flyers, newsletters, promotional materials and any internal or external correspondence as needed. This includes
- maintenance of the SSGH Facebook page, website, Google group, and other social media, as well as liaising with school administration to distribute notices from SSGH to UTSPH and beyond.
- sending notices about upcoming events and opportunities available to SSGH members throughout the TMC
- publishing the Monthly Newsletter of SSGH – the Global Health Press

5. The Treasurer shall
- manage SSGH funds: this may involve tasks such as keeping an account log of all financial activities of SSGH, preparing a budget for the SSGH based on the planned activities for the coming year, presenting a financial report at each officers’ meeting, and overseeing the expenditure and disbursement of SSGH funds.
- initiate and coordinate fund-raising activities
- manage a funding opportunities database for the organization
- assist interested students in securing funding for global health conferences, field work, etc
- coordinate with global health concentration scholarships

6.The Program Director shall
- plan and organize established internal programs and events involving the SSGH, such as lunchtime lectures, global health cafés, social events of the University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) Students’ Association (SA), and the annual SA Diversity Fair.
- leverage partnerships and improve intercommunication with other UTSPH student groups (partnering with International Students’ Organization (ISO) at SPH, SA, etc.).

7. The Director of Community Relations shall
- create, plan and organize external programs for the SSGH such as:
- building relationships with key community organizations, including Tzu Chi
- creating curricula, presentation schedules, for community outreach programs
- identifying local opportunities for SSGH to do global health service
- networking with other outreach activities/groups (e.g. community gardening groups, site education, street reach, etc.)
- Seek out opportunities for SPH students to do global health work locally
- Establish and maintain professional networks with related local, state, and national organizations and agencies
- Organize multicultural activities such as the annual multicultural dinner event (together with the Global Health Concentration), as well as seek out other multicultural events of interest in the local community (including language learning activities and cultural event outings) and communicate these events to students.

8. The Operations Officer shall
- Shall be the logistics go-to person for the SSGH. This includes, but is not limited to, putting necessary arrangements in place to see that the organization’s events and programs take place on schedule: including setting up informational tables, procuring and reserving venues.
- Shall assist and work closely with the programs director and the director of community relations, assuming their duties on their absence or upon their request

9. The Director of International Affairs shall
- Direct and manage the organization’s international activities, in liaison with the president and other officers
- Lead the implementation of the organization’s strategic plan as it relates to international activities.
- Raise the awareness, profile, and influence of the organization and its role in advancing global public health
- Coordinate and facilitate development and implementation of policies and procedures to provide education, research and service opportunities outside of the United States
- Together with the treasurer, identify and prepare grant proposals and coordinate other fundraising efforts for international initiatives
- Establish and maintain professional networks with related international organizations and agencies
- Coordinate and facilitate agreements with foreign colleges, universities, and organizations for special projects or programs as required

10.Director of Member Services
The director of member services shall be a newly matriculated student at UTSPH elected through an application process in early September of the new school year. S/he
- will be responsible for inventing student outreach opportunities to increase membership, especially from new students
- shall see to it that SSGH members are accorded the rights, responsibilities, and benefits as may be stipulated in the membership benefit package from time to time
- assist other SSGH officers with their duties as needed

Applicants will be judged based on their commitment and understanding of the purpose of SSGH as well as their potential to lead and foster the growth of the organization with the principles of sustainability and long-term development.
