The Human Disease Project
According to the report,Preparing for a Changing Climate, rising levels of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere have warmed the Earth and are causing wide-ranging impacts, including rising sea levels; melting snow and ice; more extreme heat events, fires and drought; and more extreme storms, rainfall and floods. Scientists project that these trends will continue and in some cases accelerate, posing significant risks to human health, our forests, agriculture, freshwater supplies, coastlines, and other natural resources that are vital to Washington state’s economy, environment, and our quality of life.
Because so many systems are tied to climate, a change in climate can affect many related aspects of where and how people, plants and animals live, such as food production, availability and use of water, and health risks. For example, Mosquitoes capable of carrying and transmitting diseases like Dengue Fever now live in at least 28 states. As temperatures increase and rainfall patterns change these insects can remain active for a longer period of time (http://www.nrdc.org/).
You have recently graduated from college and have just landed your first fulltime job! Thanks to your extensive science background, you have been hired as a Youth Educator by the Dekalb Health Organization (DHO). Your position requires you to research diseases that have been affected by climate changes around the globe and present your
work to students at Chamblee Middle School.
Task
Your supervisor at the Dekalb Health Organization, Ms. Moore, has just given you your first assignment:
On Monday, November 30, you will visit the seventh grade Life Science classroom at Chamblee Middle School and speak to the students about a disease that has been become more prevalent and affects the human body.
Your supervisor will provide you with a list of the most common diseases affected by climate change and she has high expectations for you:
• Your presentation should be informative
• You should present your material in a manner that 13 and 14 year olds can understand
• Your presentation should be interesting and hold the attention of your 7th grade audience
• You must have a strong visual presentation.
Process
Your teacher is providing you with options for presenting the information on the human disease. Though you must orally present what you have researched, you are also required to use technology to create a presentation to accompany your oral presentation. You may use powerpoint, prezi, make a website, video, etc.
All options must include the following information about your disease:
• A basic description of the disease
• A brief history of the disease
• The symptoms of the disease
• How the body is affected by the disease (Be sure to name the body systems affected)
• Cures or treatments for the disease
• What causes the disease (how can a person get it)
• How a person's daily life is affected by the disease
• Statistics of how many people are affected by this disease
• How is this disease being affected by climate change?
• Work Cited Page with at least three different sources. (Wikipedia may not be one of these three main sources.)
Here is ONLY an Example of how to set up your project:
Your PowerPoint presentation should be used as a tool to guide you through your presentation to the 7th grade science class.
Layout:
Your slideshow must include at least 10 slides, but not exceed 15 slides.
Slides must include both written information and pictures, photos or clipart that corresponds to the text.
Use the guide below to help you layout your slides:
