AYGO FIRST
Since its launch in 2005, the Toyota Aygo has shaken up the A-segment, combining its cheap-to-run qualities with plenty of character and driving appeal. Now Aygo has been made an even more attractive prospect, with an even more efficient engine, feature models and some mild styling tweaks.
The most important changes are under the bonnet, where the 1.0-litre VVT-i engine – a class winner in the International Engine of the Year award four years running – now benefits from the application of Toyota Optimal Drive technologies. This increases its efficiency even further, improving fuel economy to 61.3mpg (manual, combined cycle) and bringing CO2 emissions down to a new low of 105g/km.
AYGO DRIVING
Compact on the outside, but big enough inside to carry a quartet of six-footers, Aygo couldn’t be simpler to hustle around crowded city streets. Speed-sensitive power steering and a wheel-at-each-corner design make tight parking spots simpler to tackle, while optional Multi-Mode (M/M) transmission means clutch-free gear changes – a real boon in urban traffic.

Aygo headline pricing represents a clear bargain in itself, but it’s also worth considering how much, or rather little you will have to spend to run your Aygo.
For a start, its 1.0-litre VVT-i engine is capable of returning 61.3mpg, the best combined cycle fuel economy of any petrol unit in its class. This exceptional economy is not at the expense of performance as Aygo will accelerate from nought to 62mph in 14.2 seconds and has a top speed of 98mph.
With carbon dioxide emissions reduced to 105g/km (106g/km for models with MultiMode transmission), it remains one of the cleanest petrol-powered models on the market. Its Band B rating for Vehicle Excise Duty means the annual road tax for the first year is free.
Aygo’s insurance costs are rock-bottom, too, starting from a 1E rating – the lowest group possible. This has been achieved by clever engineering that designs-in components that are easier and cheaper to replace when it comes to typical low speed crash repairs.
AYGO ESSENTIALS
Aygo breaks away from the concept of small, affordable cars skimping on quality and equipment. The Aygo entry model not only looks the business, it comes as standard with features such as a sound system with CD player and handy socket to connect your own portable MP3 player, speed-sensitive power steering, a folding rear seatback to increase the load space, heated rear window with wiper and a tilt adjustable steering column. On the safety front you’re protected by driver and front passenger airbags and an advanced Bosch ABS system with EBD. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is also available as an option on Aygo+, Aygo Ice and Aygo Go! with air con and manual transmission; and on Aygo models as a combined option with curtain airbags.
Aygo+ introduces electric front windows, a 50:50 split-folding rear seat with detachable headrests, side airbags, remote central locking and colour matched door handles and mirrors. It also provides a gutsier, six-speaker sound system, including two tweeters mounted in the A-pillars. Air conditioning can be specified as an option.
The standard colour for Aygo is Chilli Red, but Aygo+ owners can splash out on the option of Cirrus White or Carbon Quartz metallic paint.
AYGO ICE AND AYGO GO!
In addition to the regular three and five-door Aygo and Aygo+, there are two attractive feature models in the line-up, Aygo Ice and Aygo Go!.
Aygo Ice puts the emphasis on comfort, with air conditioning, leather and Alcantara seat trim and leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob provided as standard, plus side protection mouldings (Forest Green only) and a choice of three metallic paint finishes: Vermillion Red, Dark Forest and Crystal Silver.
Aygo Go!, launched in January 2011, comes with a neat, detachable TomTom satellite navigation system, plus Bluetooth and USB port for connecting portable music players. Rear privacy glass, new-design 14-inch alloy wheels and leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob add to the “extras” above and beyond the standard Aygo+ specification.

A NEW APPROACH FOR A NEW GENERATION
Modern urban life demands a kind of car that’s practical and easy to park, while motorists seek fresh design and a dynamic driving experience. Aygo meets all these requirements as a compact, stylish car that’s as much fun to own and drive as it is inexpensive and practical.
Measuring 3,415mm long, 1,615mm wide and 1,465mm tall, Aygo stands alongside Yaris, Auris and Avensis as one of Toyota’s core products for the European market.
All versions of the car are built by Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile (TCPA) at a manufacturing facility in the CzechRepublic.

DESIGN
STYLED FOR FUNAND ENJOYMENT
Exterior
Aygo proves that small cars need not just be about practicality and economy, but can be a lot of fun, too. Toyota designers kept the fun element firmly in mind when creating a car that has lots of owner appeal and character.
Aygo is also unmistakably a contemporary Toyota, a quality expressed in features such as the bulge around the Toyota badge on the bonnet and the triangular quarterlights. This “dynamic architecture” styling sets it well apart from all other city cars in its class.
The car looks firmly planted on the road, thanks to its wide stance. Corner protectors matched to the body colour increase the coherent appearance, while at the rear the design is kept simple but strong with round lamp clusters set wide apart. The bold shape of the light housings flows through into the car’s side styling, adding to the powerful appearance. Smart covers for the 14-inch wheels give a sporty look and are in keeping with the car’s all-round superior quality.
The shape of the five-door Aygo was designed to retain as much as possible the dynamic appearance of the three-door model. In profile the two cars look almost identical, with the added versatility of the five-door not being at the expense of great looks. The remarkably short front and rear overhangs – the shortest in the segment – and cab-forward design help deliver a surprisingly roomy interior within compact exterior dimensions.
In 2009, modest refinements were made to the exterior, with a re-sculpted front grille and bumper that emphasise the car’s low centre of gravity and give it a ground-hugging appearance. The extended front bumper adds 10mm to the car’s overall length, and allows for neater integration of the front fog lamps, where specified.
At the rear, the lamp clusters have new chrome detailing and a dark finish to the covers to match the look of the headlamps. There are also new-design wheelcovers and alloy wheels.
Interior
Urban homes in Japan are renowned for making the best possible use of limited space; Aygo follows the same principle. The cabin appears both wide and light, thanks to clever shaping and positioning of key elements, for example the deep, curved glass hatch.
The compact instrument panel is clean, simple and modern with a two-tone finish that emphasises the wide and open space at the front. The instrument display forms a single unit with the steering column, which means the driver has a clear view no matter at what angle the adjustable column is set.
Toyota has introduced a new sharkskin grain finish for the dashboard that not only looks good but is also durable, scratch-resistant and easy to clean. The car’s body colour carries through to the interior door trim, helping liven up the cabin.
The clean lines of the one-piece sports-style front seats create a figure-hugging effect, helping the driver feel part of the car. Inspired by modern sportswear, the materials and colours used for the trim and upholstery are hard-wearing and of good quality and texture.
Aygo models feature a one-piece folding rear seatback; Aygo+, Ice and Go! versions have a 50:50 split-folding rear seat with adjustable headrests and ISOFIX child seat anchor points.
PRACTICALITY AND EQUIPMENT
Aygo may be small, but its interior has been designed to accommodate passengers of all sizes, even those over six feet tall. One innovation that helps make the car particularly user friendly is the positioning of the instrument display unit on the steering column, so that it moves up and down with the column tilt adjustment and remains clearly in view.
Aygo has the shortest overhangs of any of its direct competitors, which means better use can be made of interior space. This can be seen in the class-leading hip point distance between the front and rear seats, a key dimension in ensuring passenger comfort.
Headroom is on a par with cars from the B segment, as is the size of the front doors on the five-door model.
Special attention was paid to providing easy access to the rear seats in the three-door Aygo.
Getting in and out is straightforward thanks to a 230mm gap at foot level between the B pillar and the front seat. On three-door models, a three-stop door mechanism provides a conveniently wide opening.
Luggage area capacity is 139 litres and the array of door pockets, eight trays, three cup holders and a coin case adds an extra 25 litres, bringing total storage space to 164 litres.
THERE’S AN AYGO FOR EVERYONE
Four versions of Aygo are on offer to UK motorists, in both three and five-door body styles: Aygo and Aygo+ are the mainstream grades, with the special Aygo Ice and Aygo Go! models adding extra style and specification value. All provide a generous range of equipment as standard.
The entry level Aygo is equipped with ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), colour keyed bumpers, driver and front passenger airbags, power steering, tilt-adjustable steering column, a heated rear window with wiper and two-speaker audio system with radio and CD player. The audio system has an auxiliary socket which lets owners connect their own equipment such as MP3 players. The system can also be operated for up to half an hour with the ignition switched off.
The Aygo+model introduces colour keyed door mirrors and handles, electric front windows, a 50:50 split-folding rear seat, an upgraded, six-speaker sound system that includes tweeters mounted in the front pillars, remote central locking, detachable rear head restraints and ISOFIX child seat anchor points.

Aygo is offered in Chilli Red as standard, with optional Cirrus White and Carbon Quartz metallic finish for the Aygo+versions.
AYGO ICE
Aygo Ice adds extra style to the Aygo+ specification, courtesy of leather and Alcantara seat trim and a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob. The specification also adds air conditioning, metallic paint – Vermillion Red, DarkForest or Crystal Silver – and side protection mouldings.
AYGO GO!
AYGO Go! comes with a bundle of multi-media features to keep motorists on course, in touch and in tune. The latest addition to Toyota’s city car line-up is fitted as standard with a removable TomTom satellite navigation unit that has touch screen controls and a voice recognition function.
Not only will it guide you to where you want to go to, it will even tell what the weather will be like when you arrive and flag up points-of-interest along the way – including filling stations.
There’s also Bluetooth and a USB for connecting iPods and other digital music players to the audio system, which itself provides a CD player that can play MP3 files from disc.
The 4.3-inch navigation screen offers a bird’s eye route view and can also display playlist and album details and SMS messages, with a handy speech-to-text facility if required.
AYGO Go! adds a healthy helping of extra style, too, with new-design alloy wheels, dark-tinted rear privacy glass and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Air conditioning can also be specified, together with the dedicated AYGO Style and Protection option packs.
AYGO Go! is available in both three and five-door body styles and is powered by the ultra-frugal International Engine of the Year award-winning 1.0-litre three cylinder VVT-i petrol engine with manual or MultiMode transmission.
BODY AND CHASSIS
Strong and safe
Galvanised steel is used for most of the body, allowing Toyota to provide Aygo with a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty as standard. More than 50 per cent of the bodyshell is high-tensile steel, used in key areas to improve the vehicle’s torsional stiffness and impact protection. Because this metal has a higher yield tensile strength than conventional steels, it can be used in thinner sheets, helping save weight.
The rocker panel has a large cross-section, giving Aygo a solid appearance and providing better protection against chipping.
Measuring up for city life
The ideal car for urban driving is one that’s practical and easy to park. Aygo is designed with these qualities in mind and its compact exterior dimensions are well-suited to life on the city street. It measures 3,415mm long, making it one of the shortest four-seaters on the market. Add to that an ultra-tight 4.73m turning radius and Aygo is perfectly proportioned for manoeuvring in traffic and fitting into parking spaces that are too tight for many other vehicles.
