- Snacks and Water Bottles – Students are allowed to bring a water bottle to school. They also can bring a healthy snack for the afternoon. Please adhere to the sugar and fat content of snacks found in the nutrition brochure in the Inbox. Examples of healthy snacks: pretzels, Baked Lays, Fruit Roll Ups, granola bars, fresh fruit, 100 calorie packs, and animal crackers.

- Students can wear blue jeans or blue jean shorts every Friday.
Math:
This week we will continue Module 1: Properties of Multiplication and Division and Solving Problems with Units of 2-5 and 10. We will cover Lessons 11 –14. There was a Topic C quiz today covering lessons 7-10. We will review on Tuesday for the teacher-made test on Wednesday covering lessons 1-11. There will bespiral review homework this week. This will be kept in your child’s math section of the binder.
*Students are required to know multiplication facts 0 through 10. They should be able to answer each fact within 3 to 5 seconds.
S Social Studies
This week we will begin our study of types of regions and communities. Our focus will be on the different types of regions and their physical features and the three types of communities: rural, suburban, and urban. The second district formative will be on Tuesday.This will assess the student’s ability to read a map grid, use a compass rose to name directions, and ways people have changed the land over time. The students should study their past spiral reviews to prepare for this assessment. The students will complete spiral review for homework this week. There will be a quiz on Friday covering the three types of communities: rural, suburban, and urban. The third district formative will be on Wednesday, September 7th.
*Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, students will take social studies district formative assessments. These assessments are secure documents and cannot be sent home. If you wish to review the assessment, please contact me to schedule a conference. A list of the assessed standards can be sent home at your request.
Reading
This week we will continue our Launching unit. In this unit, the students will get exposure to various types of texts (fiction, nonfiction, and poetry). Throughout this unit, the students will also be reflecting on themselves as readers and learning strategies (making connections, using context clues, determining importance, etc.) to help them better comprehend what they read. A new vocabulary list for the week was sent home today. The students should study the words on the list and be prepared for a quiz on Friday. On the quiz, the students will be given sentences in which they have to choose the correct vocabulary word to place in the blank and complete the sentence.
Writing/Language
This week in writing we will continue our unit on How Writers Work. Throughout this unit, the students will be introduced to several texts and discuss how the authors of the text work through their writing. The students will also reflect on themselves as writers and learn tips for improving their writings. The students received their first spelling list today. The students should make sure they can spell the words on the list and other words that follow the same spelling patterns.The students will take a spelling test on Thursday. The students will either receive an S or an N on the test which will be considered with their spelling within their writings to determining their final spelling grade for the nine weeks. The spelling within their writings will be weighed more heavily than their spelling tests.
