Prokeimenon and Alleluia for the Divine Liturgy

On the following pages are the Prokeimenon and Alleluia for the Divine Liturgy on Sundays in every tone and for every weekday. The service texts for Great Feasts will usually replace these verses, but otherwise these texts are used every day.

Texts are in two columns: A literal English translation of the Psalm verse; and a Cebuano translation. In most cases I have simply copied the Cebuano text from the Pinadayeg translation, which is old-fashioned but usually very accurate in translating the Hebrew text.

However, the Hebrew Bible as it exists today (the “Masoretic Text”) only dates back to the Middle Ages. The Orthodox Greek Old Testament (the “Septuagint”) represents a much older version, and was translated by Jewish scholars centuries before Christ. For this reason, at times the Orthodox Greek Bible text differs from the Hebrew text on which the Pinadayeg Bible is based.

In cases where the Orthodox Greek Bible differs from the Hebrew text, in the English column I have put a literal translation and in the Cebuano column I have put a rough draft, based on the Pinadayeg text. I fully expect that fluent Cebuano speakers will find many problems in my rough drafts, and I ask you to improve them.

Please remember that our first goal is literal accuracy — even if the resulting Cebuano text is not a normal expression. For instance, “The rich among the people of the earth shall pray before thy face” (Alleluia on Wednesdays) or “Their voice has gone forth into all the earth” (Prokeimenon on Thursdays.) We are not summarizing the meaning of a text, we are translating words which God inspired, so our responsibility is to say exactly what King David wrote 3,000 years ago.

So I ask all who review this text to please make suggestions that clarify or improve the Cebuano translations by making the more literally accurate. If the original text of Scripture is strange, it is our reponsibility to keep that strangeness, not to make it more smooth and normal-sounding. When we are finished, anyone should be able to read our final Cebuano text, translate it into English or Greek, and have exactly the same thing we started with, without any paraphrases or changes by us translators.

Some technical notes:

  • In literary English, we say “O” before a name to indicate we are addressing someone. So “Jesus” could be talking to the Lord or talking about Him; we say “O Jesus” to make it clear we are speaking to Him. This “O” is not part of the inspired text of the Bible; it is only a convenience for English speakers. So in translating into Cebuano, whenever you see “O Lord” or “O my soul,” do not add the “O”into the Cebuano version unless it is needed to make the Cebuano version clearer. We don’t need to sing “Oh Ginoo” if it is clear enough that we are addressing the Lord.
  • I have tried to make it clear when the Greek original is singular (“The righteous [person] shall rejoice in the Lord”) or plural (“Rejoice, ye righteous [persons].”) For this reason I have used the older English pronouns: Thee, thou, thy are singular, while You, ye, your are plural. If it is ever unclear whether a text is singular or plural, please ask; I can quickly look it up in Greek, where the difference is very clear.
  • A Greek word used very often in our worship is megalyno. It means to call someone great, or to ascribe greatness to them. We usually translate it into English as “magnify.” Every single night, we sing Psalm 103, containing the verse “Bless the Lord, O my soul; O Lord my God, thou art magnified exceedingly.” This verse is also in the Sunday prokeimenon in tone 4 and elsewhere. It is also used in the Matins service on every saint’s feast when we sing “We magnify thee” (Slavonic Velichayem.) And it is the last word of “It is truly meet” (We magnify thee: se megalynomen.) It would be wise to agree on a Cebuano word that conveys this idea of ascribing greatness, so that we can use it consistently in all our hymns and Psalm quotes.

Please remember that this is a rough draft; if it is helpful to you, then use it as is, but I ask anyone who is fluent in Cebuano to please help us improve the accuracy of the translation.

Thank you for your willingness to help with this project! If you make any changes to your copy of this file, kindly send your updated version to me at , or just arrange to meet me and I will take a copy of your edits on a USB drive. I look forward to receiving your suggestions and edits!
