SCHOOL SECURITY
MAIN ENTRANCE
Entrance into the school is via the main entrance where a security system is in operation. Visitors must press the ‘buzzer’ for entry. Three telephone receivers are situated in the school office to allow staff to speak to who is at the door and wish to enter the school. The following procedures must be carried out:-
- Entrance door to be closed at all times.
- External classroom doors to be closed at all times when the room is unoccupied.
- External toilet doors are locked with a timer system and are locked when pupils are in class.
- Staff to be vigilant in checking who wishes to enter school, only allowing them access if they are sure of their identity and business.
- If there is any doubt as to the identity of visitor(s), ask questions over the telephone attachment before letting them in.
- Get help from Head Teacher, Deputy or Senior Member of Staff if in doubt about identity of visitor(s) and letting them in.
- Instruct all visitor(s) to report to office and sign in.
- No other member of staff should open the door as identity needs to be checked and instructions given for them to report to the office and sign in.
SIGNING IN SYSTEM
A signing in system is in operation in the school reception comprising of four different books, one for Supply Staff, one for Contractors, one for visitors and a signing in book for inclusion. All visitors into school must sign and display a badge; this includes visitors who have appointments with the Head Teacher, other members of staff or meetings. The following procedures should be adhered to:-
a) Each visitor to sign the appropriate book, entering the date, name and time of arrival.
b) Each visitor to be given appropriate badge, either official badge or sticky label for larger meetings or conferences.
c) Badges to be visibly displayed.
d) Each visitor to sign out in the appropriate book by entering the time of leaving the premises.
e) Students/adults from external agencies working in school with the pupils must have been CRB DBS checked.
f) All visitors to be given a copy of the safeguarding notice to read.
g) All visitors to be told about the fire alarm sound and where to line up in case of a fire or fire drill.
PUPILS/STAFF ON VISITS
There are three signing out systems in school, which must be followed. These are:-
- Pupils on work experience/College must sign out at reception.
- Pupils and staff on day or residential visits must complete the visit on EVOLVE before the trip. On the day of the visit pupilsare signed out at reception.
- Pupils and staff who are going out of school locally must complete the ‘Out of school’ register by putting a’/’ by the person when going out of school and a ‘\’ when returning to school.
- Inclusion pupils coming into school to report to reception to sign inclusion register; office staff to enter time of arrival. Time of leaving to be entered when they report back to office when leaving.
- Parkside School pupils (and members of staff if they are accompanying pupils) attending another school on inclusion to complete inclusion register before leaving.
- Pupils timetabled for PE / Swimming who, for whatever reason, are not going off site with their class group must be signed in at the reception, as remaining on site.
IMPORTANT
If a member of staff sees a person walking around school without a badge, they are requested to ask them if they have reported to the reception and signed in. If in any doubt about the person they must inform Head Teacher, Deputy Head or a member of the Senior Leadership Team immediately.
If a pupil reports a stranger in school, please investigate and inform office.
All staff to be extra vigilant at times when the door is open, i.e. 8.45 a.m. to 9 a.m., lunch time and after 3.15 p.m. when bus escorts, drivers and other people are collecting children and these would be the most likely time for an uninvited person to attempt to ‘sneak’ into school without being noticed.
All of the above instructions are very important for health and safety reasons. In the event of a fire the Head Teacher, Deputy Head or Senior Members of staff need to know the number of persons in the school building and on the premises.
Evaluation
This policy will be evaluated by the School Support Manager, Deputy Head or Assistant Head and then approved through the Senior Leadership Team.
