ACONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE DR. GREGORY OWINGS, PRINCIPAL OF SPRING VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL, ON BEING NAMED 2011 SOUTH CAROLINA SECONDARYPRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AND OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Dr. Gregory Owings, principal of Spring Valley High School, has been named the South Carolina Association of School Administrators’ 2011SecondaryPrincipal of the Year; and
Whereas, a veteran educator with twentyoneyears of experience, Dr. Owingsreceived his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of South Carolina and his doctorate in education from NOVA Southeastern; and
Whereas, for the past eleven years, he has served as principal of Spring Valley High School in Richland School District Two, also being actively involved in local community and civic organizations; and
Whereas, under his leadership, Spring Valley has excelled in every area, as may be seen in the school’s numerous recent accomplishments. During the 20092010 school year, for example, Spring Valley’s SAT, ACT, and AP scores were all above the national average, the highest in the Midlands, and the highest in school history. Spring Valley was recognized by the State Department of Education for outstanding performance on the ACT and SAT tests; and
Whereas, in addition, its Magnet Program participants won more than sixty awards for science research at the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science Competition, and the senior class had four National Merit finalists and twentyeight Palmetto Fellows recipients, among many other awards, and more than $33 million in offered scholarships; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are proud to honor Dr. Gregory Owings for being named 2011 South Carolina SecondaryPrincipal of the Yearand to recognize him for his many outstanding contributions to the field of education in South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Gregory Owings, principal of Spring Valley High School, on being named 2011 South Carolina SecondaryPrincipal of the Year, commend him for his many years of dedicated service and outstanding contributions to education in South Carolina, and wish him much success in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Gregory Owings.
