Helen Martin Eckley, 88, of Columbus Ohio, died of lung cancer on September 28, 2014, at the First Community Village Health Care Center in Upper Arlington. Helen was born to Alice Fern Richardson Martin and Walen Lenol Martin in Ogden, Illinois, on October 7, 1925. She spent most of her childhood in Illinois, where some of her fondest memories were forged with her beloved Shetland pony and best friend, Teddy, who kept her good company as they dreamed together in the violet fields of her uncle’s farm. She graduated from Danville (Illinois) High School and completed her nurse’s training at White Cross Hospital in Columbus in 1946. Helen had a long and committed nursing career that included service at North American Rockwell and Ohio Bell, both in Columbus. In 1955, she married Richard McCoy Eckley, who passed away in 1979. They made Bexley their home and had three children-John, Alicia, and Rick-who were Helen’s greatest treasures. Helen was a strong woman, hardworking and dedicated to both career and family. She was loyal to those she loved and made it a point to give more than she received. She was dignified in dress and demeanor and was known to some as a “grande dame,” even as she retained the humble simplicity of her farm-girl upbringing. Helen had a deep, abiding love of poetry, which began early in the two-room schoolhouse of her childhood. She wrote and recited poetry with great passion. Helen was also an Anglophile and lover of Plantagenet history. Books were her great companions. In retirement, she volunteered at the Grandview Library, which she considered a second home. Helen was a cherished member of her faith communities at both Bexley United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church in Grandview. Helen is survived by her three children; daughter-in-law, Diana Ballon; grandchildren, Antonia and Felix Eckley, who brought her great joy in her later years; cousins, Michael Sisinger, Judy Waggoner, and Betsy May; three nieces; and one nephew. A memorial service and reception will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 20, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1581 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Heart Association. Please visit com to send condolences and share memories.

A Christian Celebration of Life service honoring Roberta Lee Danford Pryor will be held at First United Methodist Church, 88 North 5th St., Newark, 11 A.M., Saturday, January 25, 2014, with Pastors Rich Clark and Steve Rath presiding. Immediately following the service, the family will host a luncheon, continuing the celebration of Roberta’s life, at the Moundbuilders Country Club, 125 North 33rd St., Newark. Roberta passed away on January 21, 2014, with her loving family by her side at home. For the past several years she had valiantly battled complications from Sjögren’s Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and blood infections associated with knee surgery. Born to the late Arza and Mary (Robinson) Danford on April 14, 1938, Roberta was a lifelong resident of Newark and attended Woodside Elementary and Roosevelt Junior High; she graduated from Newark High School in 1956. Roberta received the Newark Hospital Medical Auxiliary (Doctor’s Wives) Scholarship to attend nursing school and graduated in 1959 with a Nursing Degree from the former White Cross School of Nursing, which became Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Upon graduation, Roberta returned to Newark and worked at the Old Newark Hospital on Everett Avenue for two years in Labor and Delivery. In those days, there were no full-time based Resident Doctors at the hospital, and Roberta commented with pride,“I may have delivered as many babies as the Doctors”. Roberta worked in labor and delivery until her marriage to Fred Pryor on June 7, 1961, at the United States Military Academy at West Point, the first couple married that year under the arched/presentation of swords. Fred was Roberta’s high school sweetheart and they met when Roberta was a senior and Fred was a junior in the spring of ‘56. Roberta and Fred spent 3 years in the military life, making stops at Fort Knox, KY (Armored basics school), Fort Benning, GA (Airborne/Ranger School), and Fort Hood, TX (assigned to Korea). While waiting for Fred’s return from Korea, Roberta returned to Newark to work at the OB/GYN practice of Dr. Sperry and Dr. Zolo. Once the tour in Korea was over, they decided against “career military” and they set their roots in Small-town USA… Newark, OH… their hometown. Roberta loved the outdoors and was an accomplished snow skier, fisherman and deer hunter. She also loved her (Cont.)

Shine On: The Art of Nursing celebrates the history of nursing from its instinctive beginnings in ancient times to its development today as a highly skilled profession.Through sculpture, paintings, textiles, prints, photographs, and posters that span centuries,Shine On celebrates the invaluable contribution that nurses have made to society. The innate capacity of humans to care for one another is fundamental to the practice of nursing and has been demonstrated in art that dates from ancient civilizations the world over. Equally integral to nursing is the much more recent notion that Florence Nightingale called “hard preparation.” That is the practical training, experience, and technical knowledge that is required of nursing professionals in response to the complexity of the human body and efforts to keep it well from birth through the aging process.Shine On brings together images of humans caring for one another, the professionalization of nursing that began in the nineteenth century, and the continuing vital and complex role that nurses play in our world today. Artists featured in the exhibition include Rembrandt van Rijn, Mary Cassatt, George Bellows, Romaine Brooks, Alfred Eisenstaedt, and Robert Vickrey.
