Course Description:

Honors Algebra II/ Trigonometry expands on the mathematical content of Algebra I and Geometry. There is no single unifying theme. Instead, many new concepts and techniques are introduced that will be basic to more advanced courses in mathematics and the sciences and useful in the workplace. In general terms, the emphasis is on abstract thinking skills, the function concept, and the algebraic solution of problems in various content areas. Specific topics to be covered include the following: systems of linear equations, matrices, complex numbers, quadratic functions, polynomials, logarithmic and exponential functions, radical and rational expressions, arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, and trigonometry.

Grading Policy (Mathematics Department-Wide Policy)

Homework / Classwork 25%

Quizzes30%

Tests30%

Mid-term / Final 15%

Grading Polices:

Homework/Classwork (25%) – Homework will be assigned almost every day, and is due at the next class meeting. All work must be completed in pencil.

  • Homework must be complete, neat and labeled properly.
  • All assignments must be labeled with student’s name, date, and class period in the upper right hand corner of the paper. See attached sheet.
  • All questions and problems MUST be written out and attempted or credit will be deducted for problems not done. Each problem must be written as in the text, and there must be sufficient work in a neat and organized way, as well as the student’s proposed solution, hi-lighted. All work must be legible.
  • All homework is worth 10 points each, if on time and complete. Homework is graded on effort. Student’s effort is demonstrated by the number of problems attempted, work shown and overall neatness and completion of assignment.
  • ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE TO BE WRITTEN IN PENCIL ONLY AND ANSWERS ARE TO BE HIGHLIGHTED IN YELLOW ONLY OR CREDIT WILL NOT BE GIVEN.
  • NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR WRITING ANSWERS ONLY. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • LATE HOMEWORK: If you have missing assignments for the chapter, you can still turn them in no later than the class period in which the chapter’s test is given.NO EXCEPTIONS.

This work will be considered late and will receive a max score of 50%.

Quizzes (30%) – Usually 2 quizzes are given per week, depending on the length of the week. Quizzes will be closed book(s) and closed notes. Quizzes will cover problems similar to the problems from the assigned homework set. All problems must have work shown, any problem not accompanied by work will not be graded. If you are absent on the day of the quiz it will be given to you on the day of the chapter exam.

Tests (30%) – Test is given after the completion of each week. Test will be closed book(s) and closed notes. No formula sheets of any kind will be allowed. All problems must have work shown, any problem not accompanied by work will not be graded. If you are absent on the day of the test it is your responsibility to make up the test on the day you return to class or when stipulated by polices according to Lancer Life.

Midterm/Final Exam (15%) – A midterm will be given about midway through a semester. A final exam will be given at the end of a semester. All problems must have work shown, any problem not accompanied by work will not be graded. The midterm and final will be closed book(s) and closed noted. No formula sheet(s) of any kind will be allowed.

Tutoring

I will hold after-school tutoring on Mondays and Thursdays, 3:00-3:30 room 407.

Remind

I use an app called Remind. This allows me to send text messages to students and parents without having anyone’s cell phone numbers and without giving out my number. While signing up for Remind is not required, I highly recommend students and parents consider signing up for this program. Information regarding sign-ups will be given in class and at Back to School Night.
