Guidelines for Readers
Preparation for Reading
- The Readers at Immaculate Conception proclaim exceptionally well! Thank you for volunteering in this important ministry!
- Spend time prayerfully reflecting on all three readings, so that you understand the tone and the flow of the entire Liturgy of the Word.
- Master difficult words; learn the right pronunciations; practice aloud.
- The readings for every Sunday and weekday can be found at .
- If you cannot make it as scheduled, please find a substitute.
- We are ordering a pronunciation guide for difficult words.
When You Arrive At Church
- Dress neatly in a way consonant with the dignity of this role.
- Arrive 10 minutes before Mass begins.
- Make sure that the Lectionary is opened to the correct reading.
- Familiarize yourself with the announcements and Prayers of the Faithful.
During Mass
- Close sacristy door after you enter sanctuary for opening announcements.
- Wait till the priest concludes the Collect (opening prayer) for Mass and the people say “Amen” before coming up for the 1st Reading. This gives the congregation time to be seated and find the correct page in the missalette.
- The Book of the Gospel is only carried in procession by a deacon.
- Readers are to proclaim not read the text. Stand close to the microphone, project loudly, and speak clearly and slowly.
- Please leave at least a 10 second pause between readings. This gives the congregation time to reflect upon the Word of God as proclaimed.
- Do not read the Alleluia response or its antiphon. It should be sung or omitted.
- On weekdays----Father Jared will read the entrance antiphon. The reader can read the communion antiphon from the pew as Father Jared drinks from the chalice, just do not read the alleluia antiphon.
- When no music on weekends, read the entrance antiphon and communion antiphon from the pulpit, just do not read the alleluia antiphon.
- The Prayers of the Faithful will no longer conclude with the Vocation prayer. (We are now rotating various vocation prayers in the church bulletin.)
- The priest will introduce the Prayers of the Faithful and say a closing prayer after the petitions are over. After Father’s closing prayer, then announce the 2nd Collection, if there is one.
Christ is present in his Word.
