Dear Parents of Maths Olympiad writers
Round one of the South African Mathematics Olympiad will take place on Thursday 12th March during the school day. We plan to enter all the grade 8 and 9 students and then all the Grade 10, 11 and 12 Set 1 and 2 Mathematics Core students. It is in a multiple choice format and comes at a cost of R20 / student. Please note that this amount has been added to your Reddam account.
In order for our students to perform adequately in this Olympiad we would like them to practise. The Set 1 students are doing this with Mrs Harrison, but for the students who are not in Set 1 or for the top Grade 8 and 9 students (all names posted below) we will be holding three practise sessions on the following dates:

Round two of the South African Mathematics Olympiad will take placeon Wednesday, 13 May from 14h00 to 16h00 in the Maths Department. Students who attain 50% or higher in the first round qualify to write the second round. In the second round, the students have two hours to complete 20 questions with multiple-choice answers and each participant will receive a certificate.
The 100 best senior and 100 best junior students in South Africa, then qualify to write the third round which takes place on Wednesday 29th July, from 09:00 to 13:00 at Bishops. Students who participate in the third round receive a bronze medal and a certificate.
The top ten students in round 3 of each category - junior (grades 8 and 9) and senior level (grades 10 to 12) - will receive an award during the prize giving ceremony of the SAMF. From these students, the South African team to the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) will be selected to participate in the 2016 IMO.
Why should we, as Reddam students, enter and write all the papers?
• Mathematics competitions generate a lot of enthusiasm and curiosity for the subject.
• Students are exposed to problems that test and improve their thinking skills, and ways to discover and validate problem solving methods. In short, they will become better mathematicians.
• The Maths Olympiad is recognised as one of the best vehicles to identify the most talented Maths students in the country.
• Participation will put students in a position to reap higher achievement levels at university.
• The types of problems are similar to those used by universities as part of their entry level testing (NBTs) and therefore the grade 11 and 12 students, especially, will gain a valuable experience.
