Background to the role

The Royal Statistical Society is a membership organisation dedicated to advancing the science and application of statistics, and promoting its use and awareness for public benefit. It is governed by elected trustees, called the Council.

This role will work across the organisation by coordinating the governance of the Society through Council and other Committees. The post-holder will work closely with the Executive Director to develop agendas, administer meetings including paper preparation and minute-taking and working on the implementation of meeting outcomes.

The post-holder will provide support to the Executive Director including communication with staff, arranging meetings and other administrative assistance.

The role will work with teams across the staff team and will provide an overview of the range of Society activities.

Job Description

Job purpose: To support the Executive Director in his day to day work including servicing various governance committees. In particular to take accurate minutes of meetings and to follow through associated actions.

Providing support to Society Committees and governance

  • Providing secretariat and administrative support for Council, Executive Committee, Audit and Risk Committee, RSS (Services) Ltd Directors, including paper preparation and taking minutes. Work with staff to send out papers for Council.

  • Work with staff ith Society trustees and key volunteers. Serve as a key point of contact. 1111111111111111111111111111111111Manage the Society’s Honours and awards process, including advertising the awards, handling papers, writing to recipients and providing secretariat support for Honours Committee.
  • ManagMManage the annual election of new Council members, including assisting the Executive Director with suggesting suitable candidates, preparing election materials and liaising with an external agency to facilitate the voting process.
  • Work effectively with Society trustees and key volunteers. Serve as a key point of contact.
  • Working with relevant staff on communications around governance, including meeting outcomes, news from Council, Council elections, and volunteer opportunities.

Providing support to Executive Director

  • Providing support to the Executive Director in communicating with staff, Society fellows and others, including setting up meetings and making travel arrangements.
  • Coordinating the work of the Executive Director’s office and providing administrative support.
  • Undertake such other duties as the Executive Director may assign from time to time.

Terms and conditions

Salary: £25,000+ (pro rata), depending on experience

Hours: 21 per week, part time. There is some flexibility around how these are worked, but also some key meetings when you would need to be present.

Pension: Defined contribution scheme which can be joined after three months in post. Your contributions of up to 8% of salary will be double-matched by the Society (making a maximum contribution by the Society of 16%).

Holidays: 25 days per annum plus bank holidays (on pro rata basis), and an additional close down between theChristmas and New Year period.
