Action with Reading

In this program Jeanie Eller puts fun back into fundamentalaction reading program which consists of a DVD introduction to the program, eight audio instructional and musical CD's, and a workbook with games, flashcards, and exercises for adult and/or student to complete through steps. She begins with how our alphabetic system of reading and writing was invented out of pictographs or drawings for example the picture of a bulls head where the lines represent the horns, ear, nose, and turn it around on its side where it became the Roman capital A. Hebrew alphabet is another example where a house called Beth was turned up, rounded, and became the letter B. The venations used the alphabet as a bookkeeping technique to keep accurate records and the Greeks called the alphabet letter alpha, beta, omega which stands for the beginning and the end.

Action reading fundamental program is a blueprint for adults and students to use whenstarting their path of learning to read and write. There is no teaching manual to consult with this program it’s just a complete phonics based language arts program designed to teach both adults and children on their own time and schedule. On each CD, Ms. Eller indicates to the listening individual when to start and stopeach activity and/or song at the end of the lesson. She gives the instructionsstraightforward and with great enthusiasm rather than cute and gimmicky helping individuals to put the individual at ease whilebuildingtheir self-esteem. Ms. Eller said it was like building a house that the foundation is the strongest point wellthe same applies to process of learning to read.

Begin the first step of the journey of reading by inserting the first CD and the large card with number one and aah for apple on it and talk about the sounds going from left to right like you would do if reading a book and then place the cards back in aah, buh, kuh order. Then proceed to the next roll and take card number two and place it on a flat surface once done then put the cards back in aah, buh, kuh order and then take the soap card and place with the itch card as well as tooth to make the word sit after making each word put the cards back in aah, buh, kuh order and continue to make other words with different sounds by pulling out certain cards and putting them together for example rope +umbrella + gum to make the word rug, can + apple + tooth to make the word cat, money + doctor + pushing to make the word mop, fan + umbrella + nail to make the word fun. Everything has an engine sound for example the sound a patient makes at doctors office is aah for A. The next step of the journey is learning how to write the sounds through the step of tracing small letters while making sounds of the letter for example aah for apple. Get cards out take the hat + doctor + tooth card and write the word hot the more senses being used the faster you learn. Take three letters and slide the card down and together to make a word. Hat + doctor + push to make the word hop. They learn the sound symbol relationships of English and how these sounds are used to make words for example Yo-yo + Ethel + Soap= the word yes.

The second step in this journey by taking out the first CD and inserting the second CD starting with the song engine sounds first letter and pulls the word train and continue singing through the entire alphabet. Reading is breaking the code and becoming automatic decoder.Play game three sled and slim next picture frog and Fred use capital letter with individual name the next word nut the most confusing words for example book donut because people want to write with a ball and a stick do not know which side the stick goes on all mixed up then the next thing they are being labeled learning disabled making the difference between buh and duh. The first step in making buh is following the arrow from top down and around like making the number six then makes the loop into the next word the capital buh no confusion. Donut little aah dad. Page twelve words on right side pictures fan draw line from word to the picture of fan. Work on ju sound for jacks looks like an eth with a mosquito in the sky but has JA has a but that hangs down then practice the entire alphabet.

Page thirteen has two letter where q is not by itself it has a side kick letter u turn the tell backward to connect with its side kick the u sound for example the word queen no matter if it is capital or not. Page fourteen two columns one on the left draw a line from the hat to the hu sound until you finish and switch to the right side and complete matching pictures to the sound. Have fun by putting sounds to the exercise jumping jacks by spreading the feet out with the sound Auh sound and arms up above the head then back down by the side with the Buh sound until the alphabet is completed. The qu sound with the word key then get game four is keys to reading using the game like a keyboard two hands at top with numbers showing where the fingers go. Start with the qu sound at the top left side roll dice and move along keyboard left to right until getting to pu sound take the line down to the second roll on the left side then you are at the aah sound go across until you are on the keyboard until reaching the la sound go all back on the left side until reaching the za sound the person who gets to the end first wins this game helps individual practicing their typing skills and recognizing the sound by their letters by placing finger on the qu sound and move through making the sound of each letter from start to finish. Page fifteen bu + ed makes the word bed. Start with cursive writing by starting with your writing your name on top line then look at the following two rolls of writing and see which the best looks. If it looks bad it could be the way you are slanting the letters during the writing process draw lines to show how and which letter of the letters is slanting and there is tracing exercise in the book can help with this process as well just make sure dotting the I sound and crossing the T sounds. Game six the bingo game takes the one with the letters on it and takes the deck of cards and mixes them up using the picture side and places a token and put it on the m for money sound then remix the cards and continue playing the game until someone calls out bingo first then switch sides and continue playing the game the same way. Short cut to reading takes the apple card and the nail card and place them to next each other to make the soundan put m in front of it to make the word man practice auh, buh, and kuh lesson on page seventeen in the book if difficulty still follows and draw line under the short cut sound to show they go together for example gr + an+ du makes the word grand a lot of these short cuts can be found in everything especially newspaper. Take Ethel + nail and put together to make N sound then go to page nineteen to practice these short cut for the N sound. Page twenty look at pictures and find the short cut to the sound in each picture. Get card number seven and cut out the five cards add to the deck and then practice the sounds soap + Ethel + nail + doughnut makes the word send. Page twenty-one then get game card five which looks like a computer screen with a snake on it with the auh, buh. kuhs at the top the swirly part is the super information highway and then proceed to make the sounds from start to the end of the snake. Page twenty-two then cut the last of the cards and add them to the deck then place them in ABC order. Page twenty-three then practice the short cut song where the associate the short cut to a slide on a swing set. Starting a new sound Romans took the alphabet to the British isle and told they will make their own language using the roman alphabet of twenty-six letters and forty-four sounds by putting two letters together to make one sound. Page twenty-four circles it and says it to show how it sounds. Card number seven and cut out the four cards and add to the deck.
