Pastor, Grace Lutheran Church, Uniondale;

Executive Director, the New York diakonia Program

Can We Talk?

Engaging Worship and Culture

The Metro NY Synod is one of the most diverse collections of communities of faith in the ELCA. On a given Sunday, there are probably no 2 congregations that are worshipping in exactly the same way. The beauty of our Lutheran tradition is that there are no one size fits all requirements for congregations. Each is free to use their own culture and context to inspire and create a worship experience that feeds their congregation.

At our retreat this year, Pastor Rebecca Pollicino will lead us in using a study resource of the ELCA, and the Nairobi Statement, to engage in conversation about our worship and culture. This is not a competition, or a fix me up exercise. Our time will be spent sharing and learning from each other new ways to engage our communities of faith. What does worship look and sound like? How does our worship engage our body, mind and spirit?

In preparation for the retreat please go to elca.org and read the Nairobi Statement. Please also think about what is exciting and/or unique about your congregational setting. Feel free to bring examples of services to share with others.
