/ Sing-a-Long-a Hairspray:
Briefing for box office and ticket agents
What is Sing-a-Long-a Hairspray?
Firstly, to avoid confusion, it’s important to point out that Sing-a-long-a Hairspray is a screening of the 2007 movie musical, starring John Travolta.
It is NOT a stage version of the show. Some customers get confused about this and think they are seeing Michael Ball, or even John Travolta, live.
It is worth pointing out at point of sale that this is a singalonga version of the film.
So, what IS Sing-a-long-a Hairspray? It is the film with subtitles burned onto the musical numbers so the whole audience can sing along.
The host for the evening will lead the audience through a vocal warm up, judge a fancy dress competition, show everyone how to use their free ‘magic moments’ pack and give them a guide to appropriate actions(such as hissing Michelle Pfeiffer, yelling "Cheese" at Corny Collins and, of course, cheering on Tracy).
The audience then watches the movie with hundreds of other Ednas, Tracys, Links and Motormouth Maybelles, and sing their hearts out during the songs!
Do you have to dress up?
No, dressing up is not compulsory, but is encouraged. There is a fancy dress competition where the best costumes are chosen by the audience and the winner is rewarded with a small prize. The object is not the winning however, rather the experience of dressing up and the taking part!
What is in the magic moments pack?
We wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise for the audience! The pack contains five props, which are used in unison by the whole audience at key moments during the movie.
How long is the show?
The show lasts about 2 hours 45 mins. This includes a 30-minute live warm-up before the film and a 20 mins interval.
When is the intermission?
After about one and a half hours.
Can we buy costumes?
Singalonga Productions currently don’t sell costume items. Many members of the audience make their own costumes – it’s a great chance to exercise your imagination and have real fun.
Is the show suitable for children?
Hairspray is a PG certificate film and is suitable for all, at parents’ discretion. We find audiences are youngerthan for other singalonga shows and children/family members are very welcome.
What’s it like?
Sing-a-long-a Hairspray is every bit as much fun as the other shows: Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music, Joseph, Annie etc, which in turn are unlike anything else you’ll experience in the theatre. It’s irresistible fun!
