Danny Chavarria, 50, of Alpine, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Odessa Medical Center.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 7) at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with Father Mike Alcuino officiating. Burial will be at Holy Angels Cemetery directed by Alpine Memorial Funeral Home. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6.
Mr. Chavarria was born Nov. 28, 1959, in Alpine to Jesusita and Francisco Chavarria. He was a lifetime resident of Alpine and attended Centennial School and Alpine High School. He was employed by Sul Ross State University in the Physical Plant.
He enjoyed doing volunteer work at Holy Angels Cemetery, and took great pleasure in helping others. He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. In addition, he was an avid fan of boxing, the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees.
Mr. Chavarria was preceded in death by his parents, Ruben and Jesusita Portillo; his father, Francisco Chavarria; one brother, Gabriel Chavarria; and his grandparents, Rafael and Francisca Navarrette.
Survivors include his wife, Hortencia Cadena Chavarria of Alpine; one son, Marc James Chavarria of Alpine; one daughter, Rachael Danielle Chavarria of Alpine; seven sisters, JoAnn Molinar and husband Mundy, Jessica Chavez and husband Johnny, and Ester Portillo, all of Alpine, Abby Munoz and husband Louie of Whittier, Calif., Gracie Terrazas and husband Eddie of Midland, Marisa Singh and husband Gilbert of Fort Stockton, Teresa Amaro and husband Cipriano of Marfa; three brothers, Michael Portillo of Downey Calif., Frank Chavarria and wife Cindy of Midland, and Larry Chavarria and wife Becky of Imperial; and a sister-in-law, Gracie Chavarria of Midland.
Pallbearers will be Jose “Pio” Molinar, Joe “Tury” Hernandez, Raul Ramos, Abel “Chiva” Hinojos, Raymond Espinoza and David “Cougar” Dominguez Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Chavez, Anthony Minjarez, Edmundo Molinar, Louie Munoz, Eddie “Coolidge” Navarrette and Johnny White.
“He was a loving, husband, father and brother, and he was always willing to perform random acts of kindness,” said family members and friends.
