The Giant Panda of China
The giant panda is known to many people as the cuddly-looking, black-and-white bear found in China. Pandas live in the mountains where it is wet. For this reason, they have very thick, woolly fur that keeps them warm. The oils in the fur also make it waterproof. In addition, pandas climb trees well. This is because they have short claws perfect for grabbing hold of the tree bark.
Pandas like to take afternoon naps up high in the trees. However, unlike other bears, pandas do not "hibernate," or sleep through the winter. Other types of bears must do this because it is so hard to find any food when the ground is covered with snow. Pandas in China do not need to hibernate because they can find food all through the year.
When it gets very cold, giant pandas move lower down the mountain. It is warmer there, and they can find cozy shelter in dens or hollow trees. Pandas used to even live lower on the mountain but not anymore. The many farms and other signs of human life have driven pandas to live in high areas. Today, there are not many pandas left. This is due to hunting by humans. It is also because humans have taken much of the land where pandas used to make their home. According to some estimates, only about 1,500 giant pandas still live in the wild. There are also about 200 in zoos around the world.
