English
- Design an interesting gadget and describe it in a paragraph of 12 – 15 sentences.
- Create an advertisement to sell a product. Think of a nice jingle to go with it. Draw or paste a picture of the product.
- Read the story given below.
This is a story from Indian Folk-lore, from the anecdotes of the Great Mughal King, Akbar (1542 - 1605), and his witty and wise minister, Birbal.
Once, on one beautiful evening, the Emperor Akbar was strolling casually in his beautiful gardens along with various courtiers. He was in a good mood, and as was his habit, in his good humour, he decided to test his courtiers with a fine riddle.
He pulled out his sword, and with the tip of his sword, he traced a line on the ground. Then he turned to his courtiers and asked, “Do you all see this line?"
"Oh yes!" the courtiers replied, with one voice. "And what a beautiful straight line it is! Your majesty has the touch of an artist."
Obviously, the courtiers thought that their most important task on earth was to flatter their Emperor.
Now, can anyone here show me how to make this line smaller, without touching it in any manner, or with anything? Anyone who can do this will get a reward from me."
Used to the Emperor’s whimsical tests, the courtiers scratched their heads. But they could not find any answer.
"You do not see things properly" the Emperor said, shaking his head. "Where is Birbal? Please bring him to me."
Promptly, Birbal was traced and brought to the garden, when the emperor and his courtiers were waiting for him.
The Emperor posed the same question to Birbal, and having heard the riddle, Birbal smiled, and bowed to the Emperor. He unsheathed his own sword, and with its tip, he traced another line next to the Emperor's line, but twice its size.
"There, your Majesty! This is what you had ordered me to do, and I have done it!" He said, bowing courteously to the emperor. "The line you drew is now a much smaller line".
"Bravo, Birbal! Bravo!" The Emperor cried with glee. "Indeed, you have proved that I have been successful in my choice of my ministers".
What a wonderful story! Look for more such interesting stories related to mathematical concepts. Write one such story neatly on an A-4 ruled sheet and illustrate it. You may even try to make your own story!
Maths
Revision and Practice
- Learn tables up to 15.
- In a thin notebook, do 25 questions each on :
- Addition (4-digit numbers)
- Subtraction (4-digit numbers)
- Multiplication-3:digit X 2-digit (egs 264X36)
- Division:4-digit ÷1-digit (egs 7045÷6)
- BE A DETECTIVE !!
Make your secret language: People working in Intelligence Departments like C.I.D. or F.B.I. etc have a secret language so that they can pass on messages without other’s learning about them. You can also make your secret language by assigning a digit to each alphabet.
Eg. A=02, B=04, C=06, D=08 AND SO ON.
Write numbers for all letters of alphabet and try to read the message.
26 02 40 16 38 18 38 12 42 28 !
Enjoy sending secret messages to your friend.
- Let’s make a QUILT BLOCK !!
Instructions
- In the grid given at the back, choose two colours and fill them in the alternate squares. Eg
B / G / B / G
G / B / G / B
B / G / B / G
G / B / G / B
(B STANDS FOR BLUE,G STANDS FOR GEREEN)
- Cut along the lines to get 16 squares.
- Cut each square diagonally to get 32 triangles.
- Arrange these triangles to get an interesting pattern. Now paste your favourite pattern on an A-4 size pastel sheet.( you may get it laminated)
- Find any 4-5 interesting word problems (any of the 4 operations +,-,X, ). Write them on an A-4 pastel sheet in a neat handwriting and get them laminated.
Solve them in your practice notebook.
- Make a working model of devices that can be used to measure length, time, mass and capacity (Eg sundial, meter tape, weighing balance, hourglass etc )
The units should be accurate.
Social Studies

Science
Learning by doing is great fun. When it comes to doing science activities it is a wonderful enriching experience. So, if you want to enjoy these science activities, be careful and make sure you do it with an elder sister/brother or your parents. HAPPY SCI-FUN!!!!
Also try to click pictures for your fun activities.
Activity1:Fool Your Tongue
What You Need:
- Cotton balls
- Vanilla essence
- Apple
What You Do:
- Give your friend a piece of apple, and have him/her note the taste.
- Put a few drops of vanilla into the cotton.
- Put the cotton in front of his/her nose, and instruct him/her to eat another piece of apple while smelling the vanilla.
Did the second piece of apple taste different?
Activity2:Soda Explosion
What You Need:
- 2-litre bottle of coke or soda
- Rollof mint mentos (original flavor—not the fruit coated or other kinds!)
- Optional: more kinds of soda and more rolls of mentos, so that you can do some scientific comparisons and observations!
- Open, outdoor area that can handle getting sprayed with somesoda!
What You Do:
- Find an open area where you can place both of your 2-liter bottleof soda upright, with plenty of space around for a big sticky mess!
- Remove the mentos from thewrappings. You will need to use one whole package for each 2-liter bottle, and drop each package into the mouth of the soda bottleall at once. This can be tricky! Working as fast as possible, unscrew the lid of your soda bottle(make sure it hasn't been recently shaken!) and drop all of the mentos into it. Then make sure everyone stands back!
Activity3:Make a Pinhole Projector!
What You Need:
- Dark-colored plastic cup
- Wax paper
- Scissors
- Rubber band
- Pushpin
What You Do:
- Use the pushpin to punch a hole in the center of the cup's bottom. Cut out a piece of wax paper slightly larger than the cup's mouth. Stretch this paper across the mouth of the cup. Use a rubber band to secure the paper.
- Darken the room. Aim the pinhole at a bright window or lamp. Look at the wax paper. What do you see? How does the image compare to the actual scene?
- Don't be surprised if you have to rotate the cup around a little bit in order to get the right angle.
Caution:Never look directly at the sun.
Activity 4:Make your own bubbles
You can blow bubbles with any mixture of soap and water, but add a "secret" ingredient and you'll get bigger and stronger bubbles! Just follow this recipe.
What You Need:
- Liquid dish soap
- Tap water
- Clean container with lid
- Glycerin(Get it from a chemist store)
What you do:
- Measure 6 cups of water into one container, then pour 1 cup of dish soap into the water and slowly stir it until the soap is mixed in. Try not to let foam or bubbles form while you stir.
- Measure 1 tablespoon of glycerin and add it to the container. Stir the solution until it is mixed together.
- You can use the solution right away, but to make even better bubbles, put the lid on the container and let your super bubble solution stay undisturbed overnight.
- Dip a bubble wand or a straw into the mixture, slowly pull it out, wait a few seconds, and then blow. How big of a bubble can you make? How many bubbles can you make in one breath?
- Activity 5:Create an optical illusion
What you need:
- white cardboard
- pencils and colouring pens
- scissors
- glue/cellotape
What you do:
- Cut out twoshapes from a sheet of white cardboard.
- Draw whatever you want, but we tried some fish on one piece and the tank on the other.
- Glue or cellotape a pencil in between the two pictures.
- Hold the pencil between your palms and rub your hands to make the picture spin around
Activity 6: Static Electricity Experiment
They say opposites attract and that couldn't be truer with these fun static electricity experiments. Find out about positively and negatively charged particles using a few basic items, can you control if they will be attracted or repel to each other
What you need:
- inflated balloons with string attached
- your hair
- aluminium can
- woolen fabric
What you do:
- Rub the 2 balloons one by one against the woolen fabric, then try moving the balloons together, do they want to or are they repel to each other?
- Rub 1 of the balloons back and forth on your hair then slowly it pull it away, ask someone nearby what they can see or if there's nobody else around try looking in a mirror.
- Put the aluminium can on its side on a table, after rubbing the balloon on your hair again hold the balloon close to the can and watch as it rolls towards it, slowly move the balloon away from the can and it will follow.
