Encouraging Creating SMARTER Goals – Assessment Activity
An important motivational strategy is to develop employees. One way to develop employees is to encourage them to set SMARTER goals. The acronym SMARTER outlines the criteria required for a goal to be effective – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound, enlarging, and rewarding.
Setting SMARTER goals addresses their needs for self-actualization by challenging them with new tasks and providing opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge.
You can use this activity to assess your employees' existing SMART goals, thereby helping and encouraging them to identify what needs to be done if they want to turn them into SMARTER goals.
SMARTER Goal Guide
Use the tables provided to help employees create SMARTER goals.
First, assess their existing goals in terms of each of the five SMART criteria. Then use these criteria to help them figure out what they need to do to make them SMARTER. When they have done this they can identify what their final objectives will be.
