AboutTheGreatComputerChallenge

TheGreatComputerChallenge(GCC)wasfirstheldin1983asanannualODUprogrammingcontestforhighschoolstudents.Itgrewandadvancedbeyondallexpectations.In1986,theGCCbecameajointprojectofWHRO,theConsortiumforInteractiveInstructionandOldDominionUniversity.Asaresult,thecompetitionbecameopentomorethanjusthighschools.StudentsinKindergartenthrough12thGradecanproudlydemonstratetheirknowledgeofvariouscomputerapplicationsandprogrammingskills.ParticipationhasincreasedsomuchthattheGCChadtobedividedintotwoseparatecompetitions:theSeniorDivisionforgrades6-12andtheJuniorDivisionforgradesK-5.

TheGCCprovidesanexcellentopportunitytorecognizestudentachievement,fosterteamwork,andintroducestudentstoacollegeenvironment.Manycategorieswereaddedtothecompetitionascomputingtechnologyprogressed.TeamsofuptofivestudentscompeteinthecategoriesofGraphicDesign,DesktopPublishing,MusicComposition,DesktopPresentations,WebDesign,InternetScavengerHunt,IntegratedApplications,Scientific/Non-BusinessProgramming,VisualProgramming,CAD,JAVAProgrammingandVideoEditing.Many former studentparticipantsgoontobecomeprofessionalweb designers,graphicartists,engineersandvideoproducers.

InformationForParticipants

Schoolsmustbeamember oftheConsortiumfor InteractiveInstructioninordertobeabletoparticipate.Studentsparticipateasaschoolteamwithateachercoach.Eachschoolmayenteroneteamineachcategory(somecategoriesallowmultipleteams).ManyoftheGCCcompetitionshavebeencorrelatedtotheStandardsofLearning(SOL).

Thecontestsiteisequippedwithtables,chairsandelectricalpoweroutlets.Theparticipantsmustsupplyandcare forallotherequipmentandsuppliesneeded,includingcomputer,software,powerstrips,extensioncords,allconnectingcables,CDs/externalharddriveandpaper/pencil.

RegisteredparticipantsreceiveacommemorativeGCCt-shirtandareencouragedtowearitonthedayoftheevent.Registeredparticipantsbenefitbybeingabletodemonstratetheirskillsinvarious computerapplications andcomputerprogramming.Workingcloselywithschoolmatestosolveproblemscanbeaverysatisfyinglearningexperience.

Volunteersworkwithandsupportthefuturesofchildrenofallages.TheGCCisagreatopportunitytomeetnewpeoplewithcommoninterests,gainknowledgeaboutthelatesttechnologies,makeapositivedifferenceinthelifeofothers,andstrengthenyourtiestothecommunity.VolunteersreceiveacommemorativeGCCt-shirt,cateredlunch,andthegreatpersonalrewardofparticipatinginthiswonderfuleventincelebrationofourregion’smosttalentedstudents.

IsyourcompanytryingtoreachtheK-12educationmarket?Wouldyouliketoreachasmanyas200technology-orientedteachers,administratorsandmediaspecialists?Over200educatorsfromschoolsintheTidewaterareawillbeinattendancesponsoringtheirteams.Over400studentswillbeateachcompetition.Manyparentswillalsobeinattendance.Severalworkshopswillbeheldforteachers,coachesandparentswhilethekidsarecompeting.Sponsorscanregistertomakea55-60minutepresentationtopromotetheirproductsandservices.
