DRAWING AND PAINTING WORKSHOPS
Points of Focus
Experimentation and development of marks and mark-making as a visual vocabulary and language, encouraged by initial quick sketches leading to longer studies.
The use of different media tools: charcoal, paint and objects.
The use of alternative mark-making techniques: brushes, both hands, blindfold, feet.
Increase contrast of marks: intensity, speed.
Relationship of marks: tension/harmony, placement on paper, shaping paper.
SUBJECTS
1 Landscape
Working from images, found objects in classroom and/or in the landscape. Can be a series contrasting: natural/man-made, eg. moors, docks, enclosed woodland, open beach. Using found materials as mark-making tools/medium eg. twigs/earth.
2 Figure
In pairs drawing each other or one model. Still and moving figure eg. climbing, walking. Marks to represent form and tone as well as weight, emotion, time. Exploration of negative space and whole space: context.
3 Still Life
Collecting and connecting objects on a theme: colour, memory, place, use, taste, etc.
Relationship to each other: colour, size, place. Introduction of actual and imaginary possibilities.
4 Senses
Painting and drawing using the senses, the smell of lemon, the taste of apple, the sound of birdsong, the feel of a holly leaf. Painting adjectives. General or specific to one sense.
5 Sound
Expression of sound through marks and colour. Exploration of speed and pitch through marks. Using music or other sounds, eg. bird song, wind etc. Using instruments in pairs for quick sketches and larger group for longer multi-sound study.
6 Text
Use of letters of the alphabet and words in the drawing/painting. Using found text, eg. labels, newsprint, personal letters/diary. Marks as symbols, devising personal or secret languages.
These workshops may be done individually or as a series, or as a series within each subject, over one week, or weekly. Duration: per session up to 2 hours or day/week courses. Detailed workshop plans are available or can be tailored to individual needs.
