The following is a list of supplemental social studies materials that are of particular interest to me. These materials would benefit the children in the classroom, and better them for their future education.
VIDEO TAPES
1. American History For Children (set of 12)$35.40
These twelve videocassettes will help my students become familiar with American History after we have discussed it in class. It covers historical events, documents, symbols, holidays, and national leaders.
2. This is America Charlie Brown (set of 7) $99.00
Charlie Brown and friends interact with the real history figures of America. This will make sure students enjoy learning with watching one of their favorite cartoon characters.
3. Our Friend Martin $14.98
This videocassette will teach students all about the Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. (in cartoon version). This is a great video to show during February, which is Black History Month.
4. How Communities Grow and Change $49.95
This videocassette shows how cause and effect work in a growing community. It has age level vocabulary, multiple examples, and review of key points.
ENRICHMENT BOOKS
1. If You… Series (15 paperbacks)$85.00
The books are personalized account of American History. They let students get involved in the historical events and feel as if they were there. The books are divided into many short sections.
2. Count Your Way Through The World (16 paperbacks) $90.00
These books introduce students to world cultures. It also helps students become familiar with the backgrounds of other countries.
COMPUTER PROGRAMS
1. CD-ROM Carmen Sandiego Jr. Detective Edition $51.95
These two CD-ROMS produce a basic introduction to world geography, focusing on individual geographical regions and countries around the world.
2. My First Amazing World Explorer (windows/MAC) $18.95
This is a way for the students to become familiar with world geography. It has an interactive world map, and basic information about countries, capital cities and famous places.
GAMES AND SIMULATIONS
1. Kid Town $50.00
Your class is a town with the teacher being the mayor and the class plays workers and consumers in the town, for this simulation. This helps them learn the key social studies concepts of what a community is.
2. Pilgrims $53.00
For this simulation the students take on the roles of early American colonists. This helps the students better understand the trials the Pilgrims went through during the first year at the Plymouth Colony.
TEACHING AND LEARNING SUPPLEMENTAL BOOKS
1. Ready-To-Go U.S. Outline Maps: of the 50 states $10.95
These maps contain capital cities, major rivers, lakes, etc. They would be very developmentally appropriate in teaching geography, map skills, history and more.
2. World History Timeline (4 timelines) $9.50
These timelines give the teacher the ability to show the students the sequence in which things happened in history. Students will enjoy the pictures on the timelines.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Ready-To-Use Multicultural Activities for Primary Children $29.95
There are over one hundred fifty reproducible activities that are planned for all the learning styles. These activities help children learn about other cultures, and gain good feelings about heir own heritage.
2. Thematic Units: Grades 1-3 $38.00
This helps the students not only in social studies, but also in reading, language arts, math, and science. A set of four activity books on communities, homes far and near, transportation, and the world is our neighborhood.
3. Travel the Globe: Multicultural Story Times $28.00
This is for kindergarten through third graders. This would be fun for the children because there is music included. Every chapter focuses on a different country or area.
